Your day, O Abu Ishaq, was nothing

but my farewell to hopes and my parting.

And parting is hardest upon a young man

when it is followed by no reunion.

Indeed, a night visitor came to me from the calamity of losing you,

but it was unlike other night visitors.

For grief kindles fire within my ribs,

not for warmth; and the water comes from my eye-corners.

Before you, my eyes had no acquaintance with weeping,

nor my sides with restless tossing.

I could bear the burden of calamities, yet no

weight of your loss among us was bearable.

But for your death, no sorrow would have found its way to

my heart, nor any fire to burn me.

And in you I was robbed of the nobler of my life's two halves,

and in you bereaved of the most precious treasures.

Your loss lodged a mote in my heart; a mote

in the heart makes us forget the speck in the eye's corner.

When I saw you upon the back of a bier,

in the hand of death, my horizons darkened.

After losing you, I am as one with a hand

cut off, or a branch without leaves,

or a rider in the desert astride a sturdy she-camel's flanks,

famished, with neither shath nor tubbaq shrubs.

I am surely in pain for you since you departed,

and, since you vanished, my longings turn toward you.

O my benefactor—my endurance is straitened

by my bereavement—may my girdle not grow tight.

How many nights, once short for me, after his passing

were lengthened by pain and sleeplessness!

Had ransom been possible for you at death's first onslaught,

people would have ransomed you with hearts' blood and eyes,

and with every man whose ribs were filled with valor,

a guide to the paths of righteousness, always foremost.

The clouds of battle rain blood from his palm,

    without thunder or lightning.

And you see him plunging through the dust toward blades

unsheathed, and toward the backs of thoroughbred steeds,

and toward a spearpoint atop a slender shaft,

    rending every breastbone, piercing through.

Where are the men who held mankind's halters,

and ascended to the loftiest heights,

and with their generosity and gifts drove away,

among the destitute, the ravages of poverty?

They had hands that, alone, undertook

nothing among men but apportioning sustenance.

And when they clothed themselves in virtues, they made light

of the trappings of crowns and collars.

They were driven to pits of desolation, as though they were

a camel herd steered by a drover's two hands.

And they tumbled into the bottom of a dark abyss,

    screened from dawn and brightness.

And they were brought down from every towering edifice,

from heights no climber's soles could reach.

So they, whose dwelling had been the open expanse,

lie between layers and in the depths.

Why be beguiled by Time, a liar,

false in friendship, fawning in affection?

Each day there turns away from it the one who

hopes in it, filled with disappointment.

And when I stretch my fingertips out toward Time

and tighten my bonds in the captivity of greed,

my affair is entrusted to a wrongdoer,

and the bone is cast to one who gnaws it bare.

Never for an instant did your heart's repose falter

within it—the boldness of your beating heart.

And it is a calamity that we are enamored of

this life—a spouse ever marrying, ever divorcing.

Each day, from its evil, we drink our fill

of two waters: wariness and dread.

And I am its prisoner; who, then,

will go to the days to seek my release?

Though you were not of my stock, surely through

cultivation and character you were of my family.

And affection between men that binds them

and gathers them is better than bloodlines.

Who stripped from us the garment of our beauty

and cast our sky's crescent into moonless darkness?

Who turned us aside, with thirst clinging to us,

from drinking at that shimmering watering place?

Though you have fallen silent in eloquence, how often

you conferred authority, wherever you wished, by giving voice.

And though you are kept from venturing forth, it is after

you roamed or wandered through the horizons.

And though you stumbled short of the goal after death,

you had outstripped others on the morning of the race.

And though you now bear the earth, how often

you were borne upon people's necks.

Let whoever I love depart after you, for already

death has carried away, in you, my heart's desire and my kindred spirit.

I find no enjoyment, after losing you, a companion

sweet to the taste, in any savor among mankind.

The gardens of all eloquence wove a mantle over you,

and from them the cupbearer poured you whatever you wished.

It defied all men, but you led it

to your will with reins and halters.

And you owned it through all your days; only

when you were buried did it win its freedom.

They sought your reach, but you surpassed and outstripped them

at a gallop, and would not let them catch up.

So now, after losing hope of it, they know with certainty

that eloquence is in the hand of the Provider.

May every cloud with rent flanks water your grave,

thundering every evening and flashing lightning.

If clouds forsake the earth, beside your grave remains

whatever you choose of downpour and cloud-cover.

Time has not destroyed one who departed, leaving with us

words enduring through the passage of time.

And if you have departed, but your brilliant merit lives

in those you begot, then you are alive and enduring.
