    ثمّ اِنقَضيتَ وما قضّيتُ أوطاري

    You visited only to deceive, O night traveler;

Then you vanished, and I had not fulfilled my desires.

How could he visit through darkness, from afar,

Who, by day and close at hand, was no visitor?

Nor does it help one who spends the morning in a wasteland

That he spent the night among gardens and rivers.

Gray hair, that visiting guest, came to me before you in broad daylight,

And I did not welcome it gladly among my visitors.

    فَالآنَ ضاقَتْ عَلى اللّذّاتِ أعذارِي

    I used to excuse myself before its visit;

So now my excuses for pleasure have dwindled.

Gleams that never drew down rain,

And stars that gave no light to the traveler journeying by night.

No welcome to a whiteness that was not the radiance

Of dawn's bright brow, or the gleam of blossoms.

After my edifices have towered in honor,

And my deeds and tidings have ranged across the earth,

And I have won what every seeker was driven away from,

Effortlessly, and from which every tyrant recoiled,

And al-Jawza's horizon was trodden with me as its sandals by

The edifice built from the excellence of my rank and standing—

Does someone seek to match my reach, though catching up is hard—

A grasping soul in a short-striding man, forever stumbling?

His baseness diverted him from my censure; he was shielded

By his obscurity from the blows of my fangs and claws.

And you have tested my shafts, yet found nothing

In them except what was hard, not weak.

And you have not shouldered burdens that I shouldered,

Nor encompassed my boundaries and my domains.

Nor have you struck while battle's dust swirled thick,

Within a vast, advancing host like the great mass of night.

May God not cast away those men who have gone before,

Who were my helpers against the setbacks of time.

The suns of my gloom, and my torch in deep dusk,

And in pitch-black nights, my lights and my moons.

Men who, when they alighted at a house in haste,

Were guests who brought blessings to that house.

And if I called on them on a day of battle,

They came, without hanging back from it with excuses.

They fear nothing but the pain of reproach,

And dread nothing but the brink of disgrace.

As though they were born in war and suckled

On a surging flow of blood from spear thrusts.

Each knows wealth only when he makes it

A barrier to a breach and relief for poverty.

His serving bowls, like water cisterns, brim,

And his character is like clear water flowing among them.

How often, through them, I gained my desire in a quest,

And how often, through them, I took vengeance on a people,

And how often I reclaimed my rights, after they grew distant,

With their aid, from the throat of the ravening lion.

Those who feed others in plenty and in famine,

And bestow bounty in hardship and in affluence.

They fell, but my grief did not fall after them; they went far

From me, yet never departed from my thoughts.

I was bereaved of them; after them my hand was emptied

Of precious things, and my heart is bare of desire.

Nothing eluded them, having attained perfection above

    All creation, except long lives.

And we passed a dwelling that, after them, lay humbled

After standing high, and lay deserted after habitation.
