You deliberately wronged us, O Time,

And made no apology—how could you, when you have no excuse?

And whenever I asked Time for a favor

To come to pass in days ahead, Time fell mute.

My soul for him who, if he vied with the rain in bounty, would surpass it,

Or with the sea in overflowing bounty, would put the sea to shame.

And O dwelling where others than its own people now abide,

May greetings pass you by, and may the rain never water you.

And may you remain stripped of all goodness,

And may evil ever be poured into your courtyard.

Where, then, are those who lived in ease within you,

While wine passed round among them in its ewers?

From them we have all that they possess,

And they have nothing but praise and thanks.

And I quench my burning thirst with veiled allusions,

And with speech kept secret, when I could speak aloud.
