أَسْخَطْتَنِيyou angered me فَرضيتُyet I was content منout of كَلَفٍpassionate love
ولربّماand often رضِيَwas content الّذيthe one who غَضِباwas angry
You angered me, yet I was content out of passionate love.
And often one who was angry has grown content.
وبَسَمْتَand you smiled يومَon the day of البينparting منfrom عَجَبٍwonder
فأريتَso you revealed منfrom بَرْدِcoolness اللَّمىthe dusky hue of lips شَنَباgleaming whiteness of teeth
And you smiled on the day of parting, in wonder,
Revealing gleaming teeth behind your cool, dusky lips.
وَظَلمتَand you were unjust فيin هجريforsaking me بلاwithout سببٍa reason
وَلَقدand indeed طَلبتَyou sought فَلَمbut did not تَجِدyou find سَبباa reason
And you wronged me by forsaking me without cause,
And indeed you sought one, but found no cause.
وَلَقدand indeed وَهبتُI gave فَماand did not رَجعتُI took back لَكمto you
قَلبيmy heart وَكَمand how often رجعtook back الّذيthe one who وَهَباgave
And indeed I gave you—and never took back—
My heart; how often has a giver reclaimed his gift!
وَبَلَغتُمُand you attained عِندِيwith me مآربكمyour desires
عفواًwithout effort ولمyet did not أبلغI attain بكمthrough you أَرَباa desire
And you attained your desires through me,
Without effort, yet through you I attained no desire.
وَأَعَنْتُمُand you aided عَمداًdeliberately وَعَنand by خطأٍmistake
غِيَرَvicissitudes الزّمانof time عليَّagainst me والنُّوَباand calamities
And you aided—deliberately and by mistake—
Time's vicissitudes and calamities against me.
وَوصِبْتُand I fell ill مِنكمbecause of you ثمَّthen مِنfrom يَدكمْyour hand
طولَthroughout الزّمانِtime وَلَمthough not أَكنI was وَصِباailing
And I fell ill because of you, then at your hand,
For all this time, though I had not been ill before.
وَإِذاand whenever اِلتفَتّI turn إِلىtoward سمائِكُمُyour sky
تَهْمِيit pours down عليَّupon me وتُمطِرُand it rains العَجَباwonders
And whenever I turn toward your sky,
It pours upon me and rains down wonders.
أَلفيتُI found صفويmy serenity كلَّهall of it كَدِراًclouded
وَوجدتُand I found جِدّيmy earnestness كلَّهall of it لَعِباplay
I found all my serenity clouded,
And found all my earnestness turned to play.
