With this, O Time, you have severed my aorta's cord.

So have your way: today I am at the mercy of my tear ducts.

Do not rebuke me if my patient endurance has deserted me,

for my companion, my closest friend, has deserted me.

And you, whom we have known to be sparing with your tears,

be unstinting today amid this calamity.

And if you seek yearning and anguish,

take an overflowing share of my anguish and yearning.

For my burning has been soothed only by weeping,

and my debts have been paid only with tears.

What a precious man Death has snatched

suddenly away from us—what a priceless man!

The resting place of my secrets whenever they grew restless,

    and, in solitude, the refuge of my cares and sorrows;

and the one who helped me when I sought assistance,

    where my left hand could not help my right;

and a man free of foul deeds, whom death made slip away,

as a blade slips in the palms of smiths.

Faithful with his close friends' secrets, even where

the people's trusted man is not to be trusted.

What thorn can trouble my ribs after him,

and what mote can trouble my eyelids after him?

    فقلتُ دعيني والمصابَ دعيني

    And a reproachful woman rose up against me, blaming me;

I said, "Leave me with my calamity—leave me!"

Indeed, I have lost in him what I had hoped for,

and you have failed me in what you promise me about him.

Promise me and fill me with hopes beyond him, for

death's night visit to him has erased the path of my expectations.

    فإنّكِ في السُّلوانِ لا تَجديني

    And if you seek me, I am on sorrow's side;

for you will not find me in consolation.

So do not shun me in my weeping; and whenever

I weary and wear weeping out, shield me.

Do not ask me, "Why were you distraught?" Rather,

ask me what sorrow for him I have not attained.

With him, O Death, you struck my heart; why then blame me

for striking my brow at his loss?

No wonder I weep for one who departed in death,

when I wept the day my people departed.

Is there a parting every day, O Time—

parting from a dear friend or parting from a close companion?

In what mountain pass do I not see you assailing me,

and what strange thing do I not see you show me?

How often I have been beguiled by you throughout my life!

You deceive me, turning me from my experience and certainty.

You turn me between what I hope for and what I dread,

and graze now on my plains, now on my rugged lands.

Yet my balking steed, once it yields to my rein,

is swift toward the goals, balking no more.

    وما كنتَ يوماً بالمُرَزَّءِ دوني

    Listen, O Ibn Hamd: our loss in him is one;

nor were you ever bereaved while I was not.

So do not bear the whole burden by yourself,

for I am the best of helpers in bearing burdens.
