An age whose lingering remembrance startled me,
A time that brings back memories when recalled
although, being past, it does not itself alarm.
Though now gone, never to return

How much yearning it stirs in my memory
and those who behold it shed tears over it!
And how many tears well up in my eyes

A time of harmony, no fear of discord
yearning for it has multiplied its reproachers.
Though discord may now prevail

How lovely its shade, when we and those we love
Blessed was its shade, sheltering me and my friends
were two parties: one faithful, one neglectful.
Whether pious or wayward, all were one

From my youth pleads for favor still

my robe's trailing folds, when al-Baqi' was truly al-Baqi'.
For Baqee` will always be Baqee`

A homeland whose air and soil were sweet,
A homeland whose air and soil were sweet
so that its summer seemed a spring.
As if spring itself dwelt there forever

Mournful, wending their measured way

My renown endures among men who tried
who tried to conceal it, yet it wafts abroad.
To erase it, but it would not fade

ever escaping calamities, ever rising above them.
