Why does time cast down my finest men?

A man is stripped of everything he has acquired.

He takes pride in a neighbor and a home full of life,

Until he is left without neighbor or home.

He is driven onward violently, without gentleness,

To what a gravedigger's hand has excavated:

The bottom of a dark pit with far-reaching depths,

Its ways out blocked with stones.

He falls into it without provisions, save for fragrance

From aromatic sandalwood, or shreds of worn-out garments.

The defender of the lofty palace he built tasted death,

As did one living luxuriously amid gardens and rivers.

When death marked him, it did him no good

To have spent the night behind ramparts and curtains.

    وما الشّقاوةُ إلّا حبُّ غدَّارِ

    As for time, it betrays its companion;

Misery is nothing but loving a traitor.

No sooner does it give to me and lavish plenty

Than it brings me poverty and destitution.

One who wrongs me anew does not deal fairly with me,

And one who has harmed me does not benefit me.

How can I attain my wishes through one given to folly,

When through it alone my wishes have been denied?

We turn amid every fear and every hope,

Beneath time, ever-whirling and swift in its leaps.

As its calamities toss us about, we seem

Like chaff flung by the surges of a torrent.

A shadow whose fading is near, and courtyards

Set out as targets for ruin and impoverishment.

Never trust time's vicissitudes when they close their eyes,

As does a lion that gathers souls for sustenance.

    فما الصّنيعُ بدينارٍ وقِنطارِ

    Time takes back what it gives, and withholds it;

What use, then, are a dinar and a qintar?

We stand on its crooked, fleeting footing,

And on a slanting, crumbling slope with slippery edges.

As long as a man remains captive to his desire,

He is tormented between sweetness and bitterness.

At times barren, at times enjoying comfortable ease:

Who will defend me from the turns of my changing states?

Who will tend me in the anguish of a care that keeps me awake,

That banished my sleep and held my eyelids apart?

I watch the stars of darkness, wherever their paths lie,

With no companion but my grief and my thoughts,

    وأين من حادثاتِ الدهر إحذاري

    For a calamity in a brother that I had not feared;

What use is my caution against time's calamities?

When the death-announcer called his name and made me hear,

All my hopes were hemmed in by sorrow.

I sought refuge from it by denying his death,

Until what fled before my denial became certain.

Now every searing pain lies between my ribs,

Drawing blood, while my eyelids are filled with smarting motes.

I lost him, who bore my burden and took charge of

My secrets, jealously shielding them from others.

    وَيا فؤادي اِحتَرقْ جرّاه بالنّارِ

    O my tears, stream for him;

And you, my heart, burn for him in fire.

Turn aside to the house, its sides dust-covered,

And there, in haste, ask after the house's dwellers.

It once shone like a lamp; now, because of what

Death has wrought upon it, it is as dark as pitch.

And say to it: Where is what we used to see

Of unravelling and binding, as generosity passed through you?

And where are the brimming vessels of learning,

Flowing through you like a running stream?

And where are the maidens of excellence that came to you, when

    Men brought matrons, not maidens?

And where is the sweetness of blissful nights within you,

As though, for us, they were hours before dawn?

O Ahmad ibn Ali—death is an affliction

That visits every visitor, against our will.

He has gone far, his distance too hard to shorten

For young she-camels that so often shortened my journeys.

I clung to your rope, never coming untwisted

When loyalty was at stake, and to a staff that never weakened.

I tested you in anger and in contentment,

In concealing news and in revealing it.

You gave me only what I cherish,

    And added only good tidings.

There is no shame in the choking draught you drank today

Of death; is there any shame in dying?

Nothing befell you but what befell every young man

Of high station, and what every mighty man has faced.

Had any protection shielded you from destiny,

Every bold raider who climbs the heights would have defended you:

When a summons from battle calls him,

He goes by night toward death, like a star on its nightly course.

My vengeance would not have been beyond my hand's reach,

Had my vengeance lain outside the folds of death.

So go, as the joy of hearts has gone,

Or a frightened soul's safety, or the fulfillment of wishes,

Stripped of every fault for which men are reproached,

Your satchel empty of the least disgrace.

And may wet-fringed rain never cease,

Poured in torrents onto your dust by a whirlwind-bearing cloud,

Until your grave is seen among the tombs it neighbors,

Well-watered, filled with flowers and blossoms.
