Who will defend me against a people made to taste bitterness

By enmity’s rancor, until it bears no outward sign?

Everything between me and them is kept secret,

Yet not all that we abhor stays hidden.

And I have agreed, to avoid showing them hostility,

That they wrong me at times, and I submit to being wronged.
