What is there for you in me, mistress of sheer gowns,

of any worth, when gray hair is a guest in my locks?

Do you not see a guest alighting on my scalp,

after whom I find no pleasure in any guest?

Its hue erased my passion for beautiful women,

and uprooted my anxieties from my ribs.

A spark of it shone upon my head,

showing my days where to strike me dead.

    ثمّ اِنقَضتْ لمّا اِنقَضتْ وسائلي

    My youth was a means to reach the lovely idols;

then it ended when my means came to an end.

O you who fault me with a falsehood you have grown used to,

clutch with both hands at an empty wish.

    فقد كفاني شيبُ رأسي عاذلي

    Do not reproach me after this for love;

the gray of my head has spared me my reprover.

Tell a people who foolishly vied with us in pride:

what are little pebbles beside great boulders?

And what are your ugly statures

beside towering men, the tallest of all?

We are the highest among humankind, while you

among them are the lowest of the low.

They cannot be equal—so do not seek the unattainable—

the virtues of noble lords and base vices.

None among you is anything but base and obscure,

while not one among all of us is obscure.

Leave distinctions to those worthy of them,

and make your camp in the lowest places.

Do not turn aside where a tempest blows,

nor settle where the downpour falls.

Do you not see that my companions are the best of humankind,

and my tribe the finest of all tribes?

When weighed, not one of them is found wanting,

nor, on examination, is any among them ignorant.

I swear by the House, circled

    by feet both bare for piety and shod;

and by what they poured upon the valley of Mina,

    at the stoning sites, of flowing blood;

and by bare arms that cast,

    when sunrise came, their stones;

and by the two stations, between which

every bearer cast the sins from his back.

If people find disappointment at other places,

no hopeful one has found it at those two.

Indeed, my lineage springs from young men of Quraysh,

unlike those you know in virtue.

Who drink, from high honor and piety,

at the choicest watering places this side of death.

A people who, if unknown on a battlefield,

reveal their ancestry through their bearing.

For they are lions of al-Shara on the day of battle,

    but crescent moons in gatherings.

    أو ساجلوا فليس من مساجِلِ

    If they vie in archery, none can rival them;

or compete, none can match them.

    سَلَّ الظُّبا وشُرَّعَ العواملِ

    Ask about them, if you do not know them;

ask the sword-edges and the leveled spearheads,

and every body flung upon the face of the earth,

over whom you hear bereaved mothers wailing.

It is as though their hands were blades,

playing with blades on the day of terror.

Each a towering man, his frame a long spear-shaft,

for whom the longest sword-belts fall short.

It has not harmed me—since disgrace never circles me—

that I was no mighty king,

nor an owner of silent wealth and living stock,

nor drove home herds of cattle and camels.

Better than ready wealth is spending it

in the ways of generosity and kindness.

And gratitude from one whose poverty you relieve

is better, once secured, than any gift.

So do not expose your unblemished honor

to the scratches of reproachers and gossip.

For our bold man is not like our hesitant one,

nor our giver like our miser.

    فاِنجُ إذا شئتَ من الحبائلِ

    Wealth is nothing but the snares of praise;

escape the snares, if you wish.

How long must I bear the burden of humankind,

a weight no old, full-grown camel's back could bear?

If sorrow does not visit me at dawn, it comes—

though I lend it no longing—in the late afternoons.

How many a stay in the courts of humiliation,

and a watering-place far below high honor!

How often I remain filled to the brim with hurt,

soothed throughout my life with empty promises!

    As though I—perfected, unlike them—

were an imperfect man content with less than his due.

My outward state is envied and closely watched,

but my inner state is pitied.

As though I were a ravine forsaken by its rain,

or a desolate dwelling with no inhabitants.

Tell my enviers: come to your senses, for what

has angered you in me will never set.

I am the one who shamed, in speech, my eloquent

rival in words, and in eminence my rival in stature.

If you build strongholds against enemies,

my strongholds are in the shade of spears.

    فالشّمسُ لا تحجبُ بالحوائلِ

    Do not conceal the excellence I was granted;

the sun cannot be screened by barriers.

You have always fled from my might,

as dusky sandgrouse flee from falcons.

And let your eyes taste no slumber

while my claims for vengeance are with you and among you.

Guard against destruction, and beware the evil of him who

kindled my blaze, so that my cauldrons boiled,

and the current of my surging sea went mad, and

the openings of your ears complained of my clanging.

If I do not send you flying in terror, borne away

    by veering whirlwinds of dust-clouds,

then may I never answer a cry for help,

    nor heed my petitioner on a day of giving;

nor may all my people lay their burden

on my shoulder, in gain or in loss.

Tomorrow you will see them charging

over the deserts like fleeing ostriches.

They emerge from every dust-cloud dark as night,

like daylight, with streaming white blazes.

Whoever sees them says: 'Who is this who

has filled the plain with camels and their young?'

And upon them rides every man feared for his fierceness,

who slakes his spearhead with blood from the flanks.

White as a sword, though never has

his polish passed beneath a polisher's right hand.

Where you see grim death amid the spears,

    dragging its hems and trailing skirts;

while dust veils the eye from sight,

    and galloping pelts the earth with earthquakes;

and spoils are stripped, or labor seizes

    every pregnant belly before its term;

and a young man's concern extends no farther than himself,

and the tribe forgets its noble women.

If I do not attain my aims in Babylon,

I have somewhere other than Babylon whenever I wish.

If I pass the night unsettled in a homeland,

I exchange it for the backs of riding beasts.

If one town becomes too narrow for me,

my fields of movement elsewhere are not narrow.

If a friend recoils from me and grows estranged,

I shake my fingers clean of my love for him.

Better than abundance with humiliation in it

is a night's encampment on barren ground.
