نأيْناwe grew far apart فمنso, on دونthis side of اللّقاءِthe meeting تنائفُdesert wastes
وسَهْبٌand a broad plain عنيفٌharsh بالمطاياon the mounts ونَفْنَفُand a vast wilderness
We have grown far apart; before we can meet lie desert wastes,
And a plain harsh on the mounts, and a vast wilderness.
فلاso, no وَصْلَunion إلّاexcept ماwhat تقرِّبُbring closer بينناbetween us
أكاذيبُfalsehoods منfrom أحلامناour dreams وتؤلّفُand bind together
No union, then, save when we are drawn close
By the lies of our dreams, which bind us together.
فللّهso, to God (in wonder) فيin جُنحِthe wing of الدُّجُنَّةِdeep darkness عائجٌa visitor turning aside
تصيّدنيhe ensnared me بالحبّwith love فيماwhile يطوِّفُhe roams
By God, what a visitor beneath the wing of deepest night,
Who ensnared me with love as he roamed!
بخيلٌstingy عليناtoward us والنّهارُand daylight شِعارُناour inner garment
وفيand in اللّيلِthe night مُنْهَلُّpouring abundantly العطيَّةِin giving مُسْرِفُextravagant
Stingy with us while daylight is our garment,
But at night, pouring out gifts, extravagant.
وأغنىand it sufficed وماand not أغناكdid it suffice you إلّاexcept تَعلّةًas consolation
وِصالٌa union محالٌimpossible أوor لقاءٌa meeting مُزَخْرَفُembellished
And it sufficed—though it served you only as consolation—
An impossible union, or an embellished meeting.
