They denied us a draught from their lips, though among them

are as many surging seas as they could wish.

What harm to you from one who goes about at evening and at dawn,

content with a greeting as his share of your bounty,

headstrong of heart, heedless, where you are concerned,

of the words of reproachers and faultfinders?

a visitor from among you, borne on dreams.

    still consecrated—cast off my consecration.

And he gave me drink from his saliva, thus giving me

clear, sweet water blended with wine.

Yet I was unsure, when he turned away:

was his path behind me or in front of me?
