ونُوقَظand we are awakened بالأحداثِby events فيهin it ونَغْفُلُand we remain heedless
Time's vicissitudes deal earnestly with us, while we jest.
Events awaken us within it, yet we remain heedless.

We are deluded in this world by a brief stay.
Take heed: that resident is only one being sent away.

وماand not قادَهُled him منهfrom it المُغارُthe tightly twisted cord المُفَتَّلُfirmly plaited
The youth is led toward death like a horse led alongside.
Yet no tightly twisted, firmly plaited cord has led him there.

People are only departing or bidding farewell,
And one snatched away in haste, or one who delays.

There is a man whose dues death has discharged,
And another put off each day and kept waiting.

And courtyards: either a courtyard visited at evening,
Visited at morning too, or a courtyard deserted.

These days are nothing but waystations:
Whenever we pass one station, another appears.

Among earth's children, one rises above her back,
While over another she rises, and he lies below.

Like the alternating buckets of one drawing from a well:
One bucket rises for him, while another descends.

إذاwhen عاشlives منّاamong us آخِرٌa later one ماتdies أوّلُan earlier one
Relentless extinction gives none of us respite:
When a later one of us lives, an earlier one dies.

They said: wish for life, and gain its length.
I said: what use is prolonged survival?

A man's short stay is like his long one:
It returns to death's watering-place and leads there.

Show me who has escaped death, and who has,
When fate seeks him, any backing or refuge.

Noble chiefs who, after scaling glory's rugged heights, descended?

Yet when asked for kindness, their faces brighten.

I am made to exchange my friends, though I never tired of them,
And it is against my will that I take others in their place.

From the milkings of time's udders, and first draughts too.

I shut my eyes to what bends my back, as though I were,
Under time's blows, an old, broken-in camel.

Loaded with misfortunes' burdens, yet bearing them.

Days pass over it while it remains firmly fixed
On a height, neither swaying nor shifting.

Would that today I possessed a little heedlessness:
The heedless among us enjoy life most.

Ah, you two, console me with life, and beguile
My certainty, for everyone is consoled with life.

And your life is longer than the lives of others.

Do not promise me misfortune before it descends:
Awaiting misfortune is more calamitous and grievous.

Yet what is hoped for is far from what lies in the dust.

To pass over it while it lies lavishly watered and wet.

Tears that had never poured for anyone but you.

From us, around its sides, came moans and tumult.

On the morning sorrow gained the upper hand over us, there were
None there but wailing women and a wailing man.

Above you, against my will, earth and stones.

And its smooth-flowing pure wine had delighted them.

Recite of poetry or claim as our own.
