يَقولونَthey say قَدindeed قرّتit has grown still وَلمand not تبقَremain نزوةٌa sudden outburst
يَقولونَ قَد قرّت وَلم تبقَ نزوةٌ
فقلتso I said أرىI see فيin طيّهاits folds نزواتِoutbursts
فقلت أرى في طيّها نزواتِ
They say, “It has grown still, and no restless impulse remains.”
They say, "It has grown still, and no outburst remains."
I said, “Within its folds I see restless impulses.”
I said, "I see outbursts within its folds."
فَلاso do not تجمعواgather together فيin يومِكمْyour day شملَunity معشرٍa company
فَلا تجمعوا في يومِكمْ شملَ معشرٍ
يكونُwill be غداًtomorrow ياO قومُpeople طوعَsubject to شتاتِdispersal
يكونُ غداً يا قومُ طوعَ شتاتِ
So do not bring together today the ranks of a company
So do not unite, on this day of yours, a company
that tomorrow, O people, will readily submit to dispersal.
That tomorrow, O people, will yield to dispersal.
وماand not المُهْملُthe negligent one المغرورُthe deluded one إلّاexcept الَّذيthe one who يُرىis seen
وما المُهْملُ المغرورُ إلّا الَّذي يُرى
نَؤومَa heavy sleeper الدّجىthe night's darkness عنheedless of طالبٍa seeker لتِراتِfor vengeance
نَؤومَ الدّجى عن طالبٍ لتِراتِ
The heedless, deluded man is none but one who is seen
And the negligent, deluded man is none but one seen
sleeping through the darkness while an avenger pursues blood-debts—
Sleeping soundly through the night's darkness, heedless of a seeker of vengeance,
خَفيّاًconcealed بِتَزويقِby gilding اللّسانِthe tongue مُنَمِّقاًembellishing speech
خَفيّاً بِتَزويقِ اللّسانِ مُنَمِّقاً
ولكنّهbut it عنfrom أنفسٍsouls كَدِراتِmurky
ولكنّه عن أنفسٍ كَدِراتِ
hidden beneath the gilding of a finely ornamented tongue,
Concealed by gilding the tongue, artfully embellishing speech,
yet behind it lie souls clouded with rancor.
Yet it comes from murky souls.
