طريقُ المعالي عامرٌ لِيَ قَيِّمُ

وقلبي بكشفِ المعضلاتِ مُتيَّمُ
The path to high honors is well-trodden and straight for me.
The path of glory lies open before me
And my heart is enthralled by unraveling perplexities.
And my heart is set on unraveling mysteries

And mine is a resolve that never once bears humiliation;
My ambition bears no injustice
Its resolves, in calamity, are a mighty host.
Its resolutions in peril like an embattled army

And I lead myself where entry is feared,
And I drive myself into dangers feared even in thought
While battle's fire blazes among armored men.
With the flames of conflict blazing among armored men

Ah, many a dread ordeal have I cleared of darkness,
Behold, I revealed the darkness of a dreaded tyrant
While my face was marred by blood from throats.
My face slashed by the swords like the new moon

And I returned, having performed deeds of great worth,
And I returned with glorious deeds accomplished
And my head was turbaned there with victory's crown.
Crowned in victory, turbaned in triumph

Death tastes sweet in my mouth while the spears interlock,
Death in my cause has a pleasing taste
Though every mouth holds death's bitter colocynth.
And every mouth has death for its gag

And the nights have tested me, a son of high resolve,
Nights have recorded me as a young man of ambition
To whom the great and mighty seem slight.
Deeming trivial what is most formidable and great

Steadfast against the days, he is not shaken
I carry a cross no provocation can stir me from
by threats, nor does domination hold sway over him.
And threats I do not heed or let control me

I have looked upon this age with its own eye,
I looked upon this age with its own eye
So my lips smile amid its calamities.
My lips smiling at its events

When a toiler's neck bows low before wealth,
When wealth has bent the neck of the toiler
The gains of the blameworthy are far removed from me.
I have spurned what the vile hoard

May God water the days in whose shade we lived in bliss,
God watered days in which we delighted in their shade
And each was dear to each, and honored.
Each a treasured beloved of the other

And how many a night we spent defying our watcher
With an arrow-patterned cloak of piety over us.
Clad by piety in a starry gown

I press a heart whose mantle travel has worn thin
I gather the reins time's march has severed
against one whose heart is tranquil and blissful.
To one whose tranquil heart is perfectly content
