Take heed: do not wish for joy to last

for you, for the days of gladness are few.

And do not pursue the world, for its bliss

is a vanishing mirage that appeared upon the earth.

Hope and apprehension—as, for us, they have toyed

with our hopes in them—the pregnant bellies.

And indeed, in place of one calamity, in what we recount,

come calamities, despite the short span—and it is treacherous.
