هُوit الزّمانtime فَلاso no عيشٌlife يطيبis pleasant بهِin it
هُو الزّمان فَلا عيشٌ يطيب بهِ
ولاnor سرورٌjoy ولاnor صفوٌserenity بلاwithout كَدَرِdistress
ولا سرورٌ ولا صفوٌ بلا كَدَرِ
Such is time: no life is pleasant in it,
Nor joy nor serenity without distress.
يَجنيdoes wrong الفَتىthe young man فإذاthen when لِيمَتis censured جِنايتُهُhis offense
يَجني الفَتى فإذا لِيمَت جِنايتُهُ
أحالshifts the blame منfor ذنبهِhis sin ظلماًunjustly علىonto القدرِfate
أحال من ذنبهِ ظلماً على القدرِ
A man does wrong; then, when his offense is censured,
He unjustly shifts the blame for his sin onto fate.
وَكلُّand every يَومٍday مِنَamong الأيّامthe days يعجبُناpleases us
وَكلُّ يَومٍ مِنَ الأيّام يعجبُنا
فَإِنمّاso only هوَit نُقصانٌa lessening منfrom العُمُرِthe lifespan
فَإِنمّا هوَ نُقصانٌ من العُمُرِ
And every day that pleases us
Is only a lessening of our lifespan.
