Show me a man who has escaped Time's grip,

And one who will not someday taste death.

It is death, ever racing toward every soul,

Exhausting our mounts and tiring the swiftest racers.

    وإنْ كان يوماً طالباً كان لاحقا

    If it turns away in flight, it is beyond reach;

And if one day it gives chase, it catches up.

How often calamities ravage our souls,

And snatch away our kin, then our friends.

And how often we lend our eyes to enticements,

And bring our nostrils near the scent of delusion.

And we love dwellings in the abode of mortality,

That are stripped of us, though never haunts of love.

And yearn for one who either hates us or cuts us off.

O awakener of my longing, how harmful an awakener you are!

Had I given my experiences their due,

I would have severed my ties with treacherous Time.

We are hurled toward the graves each night,

And pillow our elbows in the barren dust.

O news that made tearless eyes weep,

    And left once-tranquil hearts trembling!

It came to me as a night visitor, unwelcome,

And how often what the soul does not desire has come by night!

I wished fervently that it were untrue,

And many a death-dealing report I never wished to be true.

What struck you from death's arrow struck me too,

And pierced my skin before it pierced yours.

Had I been made to bear your burden in full,

I would have borne it, bound to the one to whom I was bound.

If a branch among your branches is withered,

The days have left your trunk towering.

And if a star has sunk after rising,

Then suns from you have filled the eastern horizons.

Death has wrested a hill from us against our will,

And left us your towering mountains.

And what harm is done, while a man's tunic remains upon him,

If the nights have tattered its gussets?

In you and in a brother of his lies compensation for him,

If we judge the night-visiting calamities fairly.

He who gladdened us with his presence has grieved us through him,

And He who gave him yesterday as Provider has ended his life.

We were denied our share in him, after being assured

By the nights, with binding pledges, of our share in you.

I had not feared that death would use him to seal

The nights' gaps and openings against us,

And that stone slabs would come between me and him,

And he would be laid in sandy hollows amid the open waste.

O you, just and noble sire, whom

We have accepted as perfect in form and character,

Take solace for the one death took in the reward for that loss,

And trust in Him who rewards patience.

For no creature, though death bites him

And leaves him helpless, may defy the Creator.
