She said, “You begrudged us your tears, though

we had departed, and your tears pour freely whenever you wish.”

So I said, “My eye was unaware of the parting, and so did not

rain upon it, for I was stunned.

What harm would it do one renowned for beauty

if he were described as both beautiful and kind?

And provisions come from you; if you do not give lavishly,

I am content, if you are not lavish, with enough to live on.

For you have severed—neither generosity nor promise remains—

a cord of your bond with me that had not been severed.”
