ألوماً على لَوْمٍ وأنتمْ بنَجْوَةٍ

ألوماً على لَوْمٍ وأنتمْ بنَجْوَةٍ

مِنَ الذمّ إلّا ما ثوى في الضَمائرِ

مِنَ الذمّ إلّا ما ثوى في الضَمائرِ

Reproach upon reproach, though you are safe

From censure, save what dwells within hearts?

فَلَيتكُمُ لمّا أتيتُمْ بسَوءَةٍ

فَلَيتكُمُ لمّا أتيتُمْ بسَوءَةٍ

ولا عاذرٌ منها أتيتمْ بعاذرِ

ولا عاذرٌ منها أتيتمْ بعاذرِ

If only, when you committed a shameful deed,

With none to excuse it, you had brought an excuse!

وما كنتُ أخشى منكُمُ مثلَ هذهِ

وما كنتُ أخشى منكُمُ مثلَ هذهِ

وكم من عجيبٍ بين طيّ المقادِرِ

وكم من عجيبٍ بين طيّ المقادِرِ

And I had not feared the like of this from you;

And how many strange things lie within the folds of fate!

ولمّا قدرتُمْ بعد عَجْزٍ أسأتُمُ

ولمّا قدرتُمْ بعد عَجْزٍ أسأتُمُ

وكم عفّ عن سوءٍ بنا غيرُ قادِرِ

وكم عفّ عن سوءٍ بنا غيرُ قادِرِ

And when you gained power after helplessness, you did wrong;

And many a powerless person refrained from harming us.

وما نافعٌ منّا وحشوُ قلوبنا

وما نافعٌ منّا وحشوُ قلوبنا

قبيحٌ من البغضاءِ حسنُ الظّواهرِ

قبيحٌ من البغضاءِ حسنُ الظّواهرِ

And of no use—while what fills our hearts

Is foul with hatred—is our fair outward show.

فلا بَرِحَتْ فيكمْ خطوبُ مَساءَةٍ

فلا بَرِحَتْ فيكمْ خطوبُ مَساءَةٍ

ولا حُجِبَتْ عنكمْ نُيوبُ الفواقِرِ

ولا حُجِبَتْ عنكمْ نُيوبُ الفواقِرِ

So may grievous calamities never leave your midst,

Nor may the fangs of crushing calamities be kept from you.

وما زلتُمُ في كلّ ما تحذورنَهُ

وما زلتُمُ في كلّ ما تحذورنَهُ

وإن حاص قومٌ عن أكفِّ المحاذِرِ

وإن حاص قومٌ عن أكفِّ المحاذِرِ

And may you ever remain amid all you dread,

Even if some people escape the clutches of peril.
