O visitor by night who does not journey by night,

And can there be a night visitor who does not journey by night?

And O you whose brow's light resembles dawn,

Tell me briefly: how were you frightened by dawn?

You are generous to us, though excuses abound,

Yet you withhold bounty, though you have no excuse.

And when we reproached each other over estrangement, you fashioned for me

Your nearness out of distance, and your union out of estrangement.

And you bestowed a kindness that won, from one who received

It, no share of gratitude, though it enriched him.
