O sovereign of humankind, you for whom God

has bound a banner to your glorious fortune,

and you who have shamed kings of old

and of today, in generosity and resolve:

If we set them all beside you,

you would be morning to us, and they evening.

What have you left them? You have only ever been

foremost and first, while they remained behind.

You have a better claim than they to excellence’s forelock,

and are worthier, though they were not slow.

So joy to you at the feast! Begin anew your fast-breaking

with whatever joy you wish—and it wishes too.

And be certain that the fast in which you never

    ceased to shun desires

has been raised for you by angels to where the

Throne stands, and has occupied a lofty summit.

So leave off thoughts of enemies, for

God alone will suffice you against your foes.

Often has one failed who attempted, in ignorance

and self-delusion, to touch the constellation al-Jawza’.

If they have prepared treachery, you have prepared

    sober judgment and fidelity.

They have done wrong; God swiftly disgraces

whoever acts ill toward a benefactor.

Among kings endowed with seasoned judgment, we have seen

none but those who commend clemency.

You repay with pardon and forgiveness; but if driven

to extremity, you make blood flow with swords,

in a field where escape turns aside

from a right hand, should you seek escape.

If you look, you see nothing but heads

    falling into the dust, or limbs;

    بِ وَيَقطرنَ يومَ سِلْمٍ حَياءا

    faces without bashfulness in war,

    yet dripping with modesty on a day of peace;

and horses that, through spear-thrusts at their feet

    and blows, wear mantles of fresh blood;

and swordplay that summons victory from far

away, and spear-thrusts that dispel distress.

So remain among us, enthroned at the summit of

kingship, long enough to tire of living.

And hear my praise, for still

the beauty of my words surpasses praise.

Every praise, however artfully a master

shapes it, is earth, while you are sky.
