O rider whose ambling pace has joined the swift trot,

have its laden camels left the valley of al-Arak?

We turned aside to it, with turmoil in our hearts,

stirred by its dwelling grounds and ruined traces.

Our dejection comes from its dejection; and our wasting,

if you doubt it, was caused by its wasting.

For a dwelling above Wajrah that has fallen deserted,

a torrent from both eyes pours on relentlessly.

We weep, though of no use to one who follows

the traces of dwellings are his tears and wailing.

O wild creatures of Wajrah, shall I see you on soil

fresh with vegetation, circling and roaming over it?

And the arak trees, though their days are long past—

shall I dwell there, spend the day and rest at noon?

And is the dune unchanged, or have its skirts been lifted

off the dune by the burying winds?

I love you, O arak trees, though between us lie

the Hijaz's breadth and length for anyone seeking you.

Indeed, all time with you is sweet:

its dawn, its darkness, and its late afternoon.

During the days of al-Liwa, I did not know how short time was,

until they ended; then I knew how long it could be.

Among those who dwelt at al-Liwa and departed

in the bright forenoon is what your heart desires.

They begrudged you even a little generosity,

while with them lies your love, both much and little.

And behind them is one craving their provisions,

thirsting for them, his burning thirst unquenched.

You hope for union to return as it first began,

when the one who grudged it generously bestowed it upon him.

Oh, may your Lord return your distant one to me,

and incline your heart toward me, turning it my way.

And one endowed with the water of youth, as though

in beauty and presence he were the moon in darkness.

kissed him, kissing him would not quench my thirst.

His quarters grew cramped around him, and he was restless, until

he visited me at dawn, his midday rest weighing on him.

After union had been our way

with him, while estrangement had been his own way.

As though, in softness and suppleness, he were

intoxicated, his wine creeping through his bones.

gray hair whose time to descend upon my temples has come?

and like a ravine pouring its torrent over the dwellings.

Its slow advance outpaced my precautions against its harm

when it enveloped me; what then of its swift advance?

if its messenger had come with advance notice?

For gray hair is a sickness whose sufferer never recovers.

Youth has faded into gray hair, while

gray hair's dye fades only into extinction.

so let its white blazes and stockings pass me by.
