أَجيرَتَناO our neighbors لاmay not جمَعgather اللَّهGod شَملَناour company
فَماfor ... not أَنتُمُyou إلّاexcept الذّئابُthe wolves الأطالسُthe dusky-gray ones
O our neighbors, may God never bring us together!
Our gathering is torn apart, may God not reunite us
For you are nothing but dusky-gray wolves.
You are but hungry wolves with sharp teeth
وَماand ... not أنتُمُyou إلّاexcept سَرابٌa mirage بقِيعَةٍon a level plain
تُغرُّare beguiled بِرُؤياهby its sight الظِّماءُthe thirsty camels الخوامسُawaiting fifth-day watering
And you are nothing but a mirage on a level plain,
You are but a mirage in the desert
whose sight beguiles thirsty camels awaiting their fifth-day watering.
That fools the thirsty wanderer
وَماand ... not أنتُمُyou فيماin what رَجاكمْhe hoped of you وَماand did not دَرىknow
لِمَنفَعةٍfor any benefit إلّاexcept الطُّلولُthe ruins الدَّوارسُthe effaced ones
And to one who hoped in you, not knowing,
You are of no benefit, though you sought favor
you are of no more use than time-worn ruins.
Save for the sly foxes, twisting and turning
بَذلتُI offered لَكُمْto you منّيfrom me الوِدَادَaffection تكرّماًout of generosity
وَماand ... not فيكُمُamong you إلّاexcept الّذيthe one who هوhe شامسُunyielding
I offered you my affection out of generosity,
I gave you my friendship generously
yet none among you is anything but unyielding.
Yet in you is naught but poison and harm
وَلانَand grew pliant لَكُمْfor you صَعبيmy sternness وأَغصانُand the boughs دوحتيof my spreading tree
وأغصانُكمْand your boughs لِيfor me كلَّevery يومٍday يوابِسُdry
And my sternness and the boughs of my spreading tree grew pliant for you,
I offered you the branches of my trees
while your boughs are dry for me day after day.
While your branches to me are dry and withered
مَتىwhenever اِمتَلأتْare filled أَبصارُكمْyour eyes مِنwith فَضيلتيmy excellence
فَفيهنّthen in them عُوّارٌeye soreness بهاbecause of it ونواخسُand stinging pains
Whenever your eyes are filled with my excellence,
When you've had your fill of my virtues
it brings them soreness and stinging pains.
Still in you is spite and malice
وَإِنْand if تُنبئواyou report عنّيabout me بأدنىof the slightest مسرّةٍjoy
فَلَيسَthen there is not لَكُمْfor you إلّاexcept الوجوهthe faces العوابسُthe scowling ones
And if you report even the slightest joy of mine,
If you speak the slightest good of me
then you have nothing but scowling faces to show.
Still your faces are scowling and bitter
وَهَلand is حَسَدُenvy of الأقوامِthe people طارواthey soared إلىto العُلاthe heights
وَأَنتمْand you بِطاءُslow الخَطْوof step إلّاexcept وَساوسُidle imaginings
And is envy of those who have soared to the heights,
Does envy of the people lead you to rise?
while you are slow of step, anything but idle imaginings?
While you creep slowly, whispering mischief
فَلاso may no وَرَدتْcome to drink ماءًwater زُلالاًclear and sweet مشافرٌcamel-lips
وَلاand may no حُبِيتْbe favored مِنكمْamong you بخيرٍwith good معاطسُnoses
So may your camel-lips never reach clear, sweet water,
No stream of cool water comes from you
and may no nose among you be favored with good.
Nor any good that I've come to expect
وَلاand may not كنتُمُyou be إلّاexcept كَماas تَكرهونَهُyou hate it
وَلاand may no اِعتادَكمْrevisit you نوءٌa rainstorm منof الرّزقsustenance راجسُthundering
And may you be nothing but what you loathe,
You're as hateful as I find you to be
and may no thundering rainstorm of sustenance return to you.
Misfortune does not grace you, nor fortune
