ياO مالكاًowner رِقِّيmy bondage بلاwithout ثَمَنٍa price
غيرexcept الملاحةِloveliness منهfrom him والحسنِand beauty
O master of my bondage, for no price
O possessor of grace without price
Save his own loveliness and beauty.
Other than sailing and beauty from it
إنَّindeed الّذيthat which نمَّspread malicious tales الوشاةُthe slanderers بهabout it
لمdid not يصدقواspeak truthfully فيهabout it ولمand did not يكُنِhappen
Indeed, what the slanderers whispered about—
Indeed, what the slanderers spread
They spoke no truth about it, and it never happened.
They did not believe it, nor did it happen
وهَجَرتنيand you abandoned me فطردتso you drove away معتمداًdeliberately
عنfrom مُقْلَتَيَّmy two eyes لَذاذَةَthe sweetness of الوَسَنِdrowsiness
And you abandoned me, deliberately banishing
And you deserted me, so I dismissed relying
The sweetness of drowsiness from my eyes.
On my eyelids the pleasure of intimacy
فقبيحso the ugliness of ظلمِكyour cruelty فيهin it يعذُلنيreproaches me
ومليحُand the loveliness of ظُلمٍcruelty منكfrom you يعذرنيexcuses me
So the ugliness of your cruelty in this reproaches me,
So ugly is your injustice in it, it blames me
While the loveliness of cruelty from you excuses me.
And good is injustice from you that excuses me
ولِمنْand for whom ألومُI blame وإنّماand it is only بصريmy sight
هذيthis جنايتُهُits crime علىagainst بَدَنيmy body
And whom shall I blame? It is my sight alone:
And who do I blame, when my vision
This is its crime against my body.
This is its crime against my body
هيit محنةٌan ordeal لولاwere it not for الغرورُdelusion بهاby it
حازتْwould encompass ضِراراًin harm سائرَall other المِحَنِordeals
It is an ordeal that, but for the delusion it brings,
It is an ordeal, if not for vanity in it
Would encompass the harm of all other ordeals.
It would have brought harm to all ordeals
وَلوand if اِنّindeed لِيI had قلباًa heart يطاوعنيobeys me
ليئِسْتُI would despair ممّنُof one who ليسdoes not يرحمنيhave mercy on me
And if I had a heart that obeyed me,
And if I had a heart that obeys me
I would despair of the one who shows me no mercy;
I would despair of one who does not have mercy on me
فقطعتُthen I would cut off منfrom إنصافِهِhis fair treatment أَمَلِيmy hope
ونفضتُand I would shake off منfrom إسعافِهِhis aid دَرَنِيmy grime
Then I would cut off my hope of fair treatment from him,
So I cut off hope of his fairness
And shake off the grime of hoping for his aid.
And I shook off my necklaces from his aid
