O king of kings, there has reached me what

you bestowed of favor and attentive care.

And you sent requesting praise; indeed, it

is a crown for my head and the two bracelets on my hand.

Nor was the honor done me—blessed be his bounty—anything

but the silk of my robes and the pearls of my necklace.

Nothing delayed the verse you were seeking

among these people, at every gathering,

but an illness—may you be spared it—and I

am content to bear affliction as your ransom.

    ولم أرضَ قولاً فيكَ غيرَ مجوَّدِ

    And what I complained of stood in the way of refinement;

I accepted no verse about you unless finely wrought.

A bound tongue has no utterance

to speak, nor can a fettered man's foot walk.

And how could I abandon praising one whose praise

has been for all time my glorification and my long night devotion?

Through it I triumph in deed over every doer,

and through it I glory in speech above every reciter.

And how many odes I have in praise of your loftiness,

proudly surpassing the verse of every ode-maker!

They travel on camel-saddles east and west,

crossing among us every land and barren waste.

They enrapture whoever lends them his ear,

as Maʿbad's melodies enraptured the wine-drinker.

And if the singer warbles them melodiously,

you forget the song of the warbling doves.

I have served you in my maturity for thirty years,

going at evening and at dawn with what pleases you in me.

No unintended lapse has come from me,

much less what a deliberate offender's hand commits.

My striving has been for your pleasure alone,

and my undivided devotion for your wishes alone.

Darkness sleeps without me, while I traverse its breadth,

praying for what you desire, with an eyelid kept awake.

And I know that I am one whose prayer is answered,

for my true sincerity and unalloyed affection.

    فخذْ رِبْقتِي عفواً بملكٍ مجدّدِ

    You had already made me your bondsman long ago;

so take my tether freely, with your ownership renewed.

As for our lords, your sons, they

have surpassed, in the sky of loftiness, every Farqad star.

Swords of raiding and dominion among us,

caverns of security and repose among us.

They inherited that nobility within them,

as you wished it, from lord after lord.

    ولا خيرَ فيمن عاش غيرَ محسَّدِ

    You were envied for them when their perfection reached its height;

there is no good in anyone who lives unenvied.

How much attachment to kingship is theirs,

and how many a lofty, firmly built ascent!

In them are seen, from those traits of yours

with which you dazzled, traces of glory and lordship.

Nor, when you shot toward your wishes,

did you loose them as arrows save as shafts aimed true.

May you always be shielded by them from every fear,

and may you always attain through them every aim.

You belong to a people who, when they enter battle,

show captives there in plenty, and young men slain,

and white blades notched in the striking,

and tawny spears splintered in the thrusting.

They refused to turn aside from his great forbearance [wording unclear],

or recoil from a blazing inferno,

or return except with their ranks united,

won for themselves from the hand of scattered ranks.

Among them, though fears were many, none was seen

turning toward safety, nor any fleeing.

They slaked their thirst only with what flowed along the spears,

as one parched with thirst drinks his fill of water.

And live forever for glory, praise, and generosity,

    swimming immersed in everlasting life.

And if Time should seek to harm you through its vicissitudes,

may it listen with a severed ear and bite with a toothless mouth.

May nothing ever rise over the dynasty through which

we have risen, save stars of good fortune.
