My works and my accounts are for spreading your excellence,
To spread your virtues are my works and tales
And in loyalty to you are my public words and my secrets.
And in your loyalty my declarations and secrets

صِفْرٌdevoid منof العابِfault عُريانٌbare منof العارِdisgrace
And you, among those we have come to acknowledge as lords,
You are the one from among those we befriend
are free of fault, bare of disgrace.
Empty of desires, bare of shame
أَوْليتَyou bestowed ماwhat لمnot يكنwas أرجوهI hope for it مبتدئاًtaking the initiative
وحُزْتَand you gained غايةَthe utmost تأميليof my hope وإيثاريand my preference
You bestowed, unasked, what I had not hoped for,
You granted what I hadn't hoped for in the beginning
and won the fullest measure of my hope and favor.
And attained the goal of my aspirations and preference
وَكيفَand how يَبلغreach شكرِيmy thanks مَنone who أَطالَlengthened يَديmy hand
مدّاًin reach وَأَعلقand fastened بالعلياءِto the heights أَظفاريmy fingernails
And how can my thanks reach one who lengthened my hand
How can my gratitude reach one who extended my hand
in its reach, and made my nails cling to the heights?
Stretching and suspending my claws to the highest

فيin عَرْصَةِthe courtyard العزِّof honor داراًa house أيَّماwhat a دارِhouse
Indeed, the most illustrious Abu al-Khattab lodged me
Indeed death made Abu Al-Khattab reside
in honor's courtyard, in a house—what a house!
In the yard of glory, whatever dwelling

He raised my station before the king of the earth,
Higher in the presence of the King of the earth is my status
unasked, and exalted my standing in his abode.
Pardoned and elevated in his place is my esteem
وَقامَand he rose لاno حَصَرٌfaltering in speech منهfrom him ولاnor عَجَلٌhaste

And he rose, without faltering or haste,
And he stood without limit or haste
unveiling to his ears the maidens of my verse.
To clear on his hearing the first fruits of my poems

إذاwhenever ذُكِرتُI am mentioned وزنديand my firestick عندهwith him الواريthe spark-producing one
So now mine is the highest-winning lot-arrow in his gatherings,
So now my prominent ode in his gatherings
whenever I am mentioned, and my firestick sparks in his presence.
When I am mentioned and my companion defends me

So take as reward for what you granted me of graces
the reins of every far-famed, ever-roaming poem,
The reins of every straying thought led to you

What was not compliant to anyone before you
nor a frequent visitor to anyone else in the world.
Nor for other than you in life visitors

So take my reins surrendered
for I cheapen my poems for no one but you.
For I do not permit except for you my poems
