My reprover said to me, “Keep away from love.”

Yet how can one sober up from love’s intoxication?

He blamed one infatuated with her, while himself untroubled,

and one grieving for love of her, while himself untouched by love.

Every day in love, for a lover

who is in longing’s grip, is wasted.

There is nothing in love but vexation and

deliberate clouding—how, then, can clarity be sought?

We have complained to her whom beauty led us

to—if only complaint were of any use.

And we asked the one who wronged us, throughout the

days, for pardon; yet no pardon came from him.

Every day, on your account, he burns

from separation, and grieves at your turning away.

And he suffers punishment, though he has committed no offense,

and reproach, though he has made no misstep.
