My life be ransom for those I met that morning at Jamʿ,

Hastily drawing down their gauzy veils.

We passed them, driving our mounts hard,

Making for Minā, we sought no halt.

Amid the litters, a full moon of the dark night took me captive

With his countenance, though he had not cast aside his veil.

And when love for him took shape before me,

At the mountain pass, it kept me from the ritual circuit.

And my foot slipped from piety, as though

I had not been a chaste man there.
