May you attain your wishes in all you seek,

    and may you be preserved as a refuge for these people;

may you be spared the stumbles of time,

and kept far from death's visitations.

And may you ever remain, in every pursuit

of glory, above the peaks and the hump.

May you be congratulated on the feast—a feast of good fortune,

of thwarting the envier and humbling the rival.

For it has come, bringing us word of your

continued life and the endurance you hope for.

And indeed, the blessing that is yours

drinks draught upon draught of perfection's milk.

And you pierce through all that

you point toward, as arrows pierce.

And since you have surpassed all kings,

we have called you, among us, the hero of heroes.

None has overlooked the glorious deeds you established

above men, among men, save those asleep.

How many an incursion you have made among the enemy,

    while war blazed like a raging fire;

and how many a stand in the straits of combat,

while the army was aflame with rout!

You pass around the cups of death as

cupbearers pass around the cups of wine.

And your face amid the darkness of battle-dust

is like a full moon illuminating the blackness of the dark.

And you ride upon the back of a high-necked steed,

    thick-legged and full of girth;

as though, upon him, you were on Yadhbul,

or else upon a crag of Shamam.

His rider makes him wade through seas,

and makes him stumble over formidable champions.

So, O son of peaks—the mountain peaks

in loftiness—and O son of overflowing seas,

and of a people gone before, who spoke no obscenity

    and heard no words of reproach;

untainted by anything that could blemish them,

free of every disgrace and fault.

Their young child is as wise as men of mature years,

and one of them is like a vast army.

They appear lean, yet their hands

    hold sway in momentous affairs.

    Generous, yet such lavish givers

of their wealth that they have put the generous to shame.

I love you as souls love life,

and as one loves healing amid sickness.

And I care not, if you are

behind me, what comes at me from before me.

    I was skittish, fiercely defiant,

then your fingertips guided my rein.

And I am the one you approve,

whom you have tested in momentous affairs.

As though I were your spearhead on the day of spear combat,

and your tongue's keen edge on the day of dispute.

And should you ever seek vengeance,

I would show you, with my hand, how I take vengeance.

And if you strike heads with my edge,

you strike with a blade neither dull nor blunt.

    And my tongue, in defending

you, moves whenever you wish as my sword does.

So take it: how many words, though brief,

    have spared us lengthy speech!

As though its scent were the scent of a garden,

or else a fragrance of wine.

It trots swiftly through all lands,

    as roaming ostriches trot.

So do not listen, when you hear poetry,

except to the verse I weave from my own words.

Peace! And may you remain filled

with our greeting and peace forever.
