    May her home, where separation has settled her, be watered

    By a cloud with pierced waterskins, shedding its burden.

    And whenever I set out intent on some other aim,

    I would turn toward her dwellings and take a detour.

    For longing for them brings me a lover's wail,

    And I have tears flowing as blood, and sobs.

    So if you chide me someday, while your heart is yielding,

    Free of love—yet my heart is stubbornly attached to them.

    على عرفاتٍ والمَطِيُّ وُلوجُ

    I have sworn by the Lord of those standing at evening

    At Arafat, while the riding camels stream in;

    من الأَينِ منها راعفٌ وشَجيجُ

    And by the sacrificial camels, their padded feet hastening toward Jamʿ,

    Some bleeding from exhaustion, and others split open;

    لها بين هاتيك الجِمارِ خَديجُ

    And by what they slaughtered at Mina—a mature she-camel

    With a premature calf among those Jamarat;

    وَطافَ بهِ بعدَ الحَجيج حجيجُ

    And by the House, at whose corner the consecrated pilgrims sought refuge,

    And pilgrims circled it after other pilgrims;

    And when they had fulfilled their wishes there, they bade farewell,

    And their livelihoods found relief from their straitness—

    فَليس له عُمْر الزّمان خُروجُ

    Surely, love for you is as precious to my heart as my heart itself;

    So it shall never leave, as long as time endures.

    For if they reproach it, its sorrow grows, and it is stirred

    To yet greater longing by what would scarcely stir it.

    And how can reproach help, when reproach remains outside,

    While love for you is lodged deep between the ribs?
