سَقىmay ... water اللَّهُGod يوماًa day فيهin it علىupon المُنىhopes
وَكنتand I was عليهاover them الدّهرَall my life أُسبلُI let fall عَبْرتيmy tears
May God water a day in which ... “upon hopes” [wording unclear].
And over them I had shed my tears all my life.
وَواصِلand sought union مَنْone whose ماءُwater الشّبيبةِof youth مِلْؤُهُhis fill
ولمand did not ينهَهُdeter him عنّيfrom me مشيبيmy gray hair وكِبْرَتِيand my old age
And one filled with the water of youth sought union with me;
My gray hair and old age did not deter him from me.
وكانand was التّلاقيthe meeting فيهon it غيباًan unseen matter مُرَجَّماًguessed at
وجاءand he came بلاwithout وعدٍan appointment فروّيتُso I quenched غُلَّتيmy burning thirst
And meeting that day had been a matter of blind conjecture.
And he came without an appointment, so I quenched my burning thirst.
فإنْfor if تكُbe منهfrom him عِلَّتِيmy sickness وفراقُهُand his parting
فقدthen indeed طردتْhas driven away منهfrom him الزّيارةُthe visit عِلّتيmy sickness
For if my sickness and his parting come from him,
Then a visit from him has indeed driven my sickness away.
