    Love's sighs will do nothing but rise,

    and longing's flame will do nothing but blaze.

    And since they wandered away, I have found

    only banished slumber for our eyes.

    وَمِن أَين ذكرى غائر الدّار مُنجدا

    In the two Ghawrs I remembered Najd, in my folly;

    and how can a lowland-dweller recall one dwelling in Najd?

    فلم يبق بعد البين شيءُ سوى الرّدى

    Separation took from us life and its sweetness;

    and after separation nothing remained but death.

    So tell the one who plans departure, supposing

    that I can bear separation steadfastly:

    فَما كانَ ذاكَ الوعدُ إلّا تَوعّدا

    You promised a parting that robs life of its sweetness;

    that promise was nothing but a threat.

    It never occurred to me that our union would be scattered,

    and that al-Amid would deliberately move far from my home.

    It did not please me that you left me while I

    stayed in my land, or that you were absent while I was present.

    وما عادَلَ المرحومُ فيك المُحسَّدا

    He who envied me yesterday will pity me;

    one pitied on your account is no equal of one envied.

    ومَنْ ذا بُعَيْدَ الأُنسِ يرضى التوحّدا

    I remain alone, after being one of two;

    and who, so soon after companionship, would accept solitude?

    For ages I had been content with separation,

    yet you kept working on me until I hated solitude.

    I brandished you as a sword that never swerved from its target,

    keen in action, just as I assayed you and found pure gold.

    All that lay between you and me

    was love; with all other men, only friendly overtures.

    If no common root unites us,

    affection has forged a shared ancestry within us.

    And whomever an abode of proven love draws

    close to me—let birth not be what brings him close.

    I never feared I would encounter trial through you,

    and you would take from my hands the Indian blade I had in you,

    or that I would drink sweet, pure water through you, only for

    your parting to give me scant draughts of brine.

    Had you not departed from me, I would not have been one

    to care about someone far away who left me at dusk or dawn.

    The poetry from you has enriched me, as though it were

    gardens high on rugged ground, richly watered by dew.

    It hung a favor round my neck; before it,

    by your good fortune, I wore no such necklace among men.

    Had I chanted it, making music with it,

    at dawn, I would have enraptured the singing doves.

    It was as though, when I drank its limpid water,

    I drank clear water from a cloud while parched with thirst.

    So take it, as affection wished and you desired it:

    a string of verse, ordered for all the passing ages.

    وإنْ شئتَ طوراً قوّةً كان جَلْمَدا

    At times it is water in delicacy and flowing ease;

    and, if you wish, at times in strength it is solid rock.

    When you called for verse from me, you heard it,

    though for anyone seeking it, it was as remote as Nasr and Farqad.
