    وضلّتْ أمانٍ لا يُبَلَّغُها العُمرُ

    Little indeed avails reproach when Time is the offender;

    And hopes are lost that a lifetime cannot reach.

    By the life of high honor, I will not remain a slave to complaint,

    Though what befalls my heart is a wrong to avenge.

    God keep you, heart—how little you care

    For what patience itself shrinks from bearing.

    Gifts pass without baring my molar,

    And calamities come, empty of any anguish from me.

    قنوعِيَ إثرائِي وللجزعِ العُسرُ

    Wealth and poverty are the same to me;

    My contentment is my wealth; hardship belongs to dismay.

    I renounced life's luxuries, except the least of them,

    While among the people are those whose abundance overwhelms their forbearance.

    I abstain, though the lures of greed are many,

    And I understand, though cunning deceives minds.

    وأشقى الورى من لا يصرّفه الدّهرُ

    For every age I have a strategy among my ways;

    The most wretched of mankind is one whom time cannot change.

    I have seen none but those who weaken under hardship,

    And affliction diminishes the fullness of their fortitude.

    وَقلتُ فَلَم يَأنس بِمنطِقيَ الهُجرُ

    I kept silent, but never while something worthwhile remained to say;

    And when I spoke, obscenity found no home in my words.

    لذاك رِكابِي ليس يحظى بها مصرُ

    I am little given to delay over what unsettles me;

    Thus no city enjoys the stay of my mounts.

    وإنِّيَ مَن يُلقى على غيره الفخرُ

    Self-sufficient, I need neither my following nor my clan;

    It is through me that glory falls upon others.

    And an ally, like a heart disease beyond all cure,

    Burdens me with what no back can rise beneath.

    He withheld fair dealing from me without cause for suspicion,

    Yet I have no need of fair dealing from anyone.

    Would that I knew: shall I ever see other than a companion

    Whose secret self burns against me, while his open words favor me?

    I draw forth only meager loyalty,

    Watered down, with treachery crying from every side.

    If a close friend's traits toss me about,

    The lightest thing my hands cast at him is estrangement.

    Your friend is one whose words would please you in your absence,

    Who is not seized by the impulse to break your covenant.

    Indeed, by my father, I never spent a night submitting to humiliation,

    And white blades and brown spears have made themselves known to me.

    وذاك صنيعٌ يستجيب له الشّكرُ

    I refused to be led by mankind's halter;

    And that is a deed to which gratitude responds.

    Some men wish me to greet them with delight,

    But smiles do little against enmity.

    Even one whose reins will not yield is drawn to me—

    By qualities too lofty for any telling to rival.

    Among the things that banished arrogance from my nature toward them

    Was my certainty that arrogance is the blight of greatness.

    May I be bereft of hopes! How they cloud life!

    But for hopes, travelers would never seek aid in travel.

    He whose cares build up the house of wishes

    Persists, while glory's dwelling stands empty of his like.

    Why this passion for life, that I should desire its abundance,

    When at extinction scant and plentiful are alike?

    Mankind's malady is love of life—and how severely

    A disease's plight worsens when it cannot heal!

    I would ransom with my life one whose ear will not take in reproach,

    And from the branch of whose speech no excuse can be plucked.

    Bold when combat presses hard upon its fighters,

    Resourceful when the breast yields no hope.

    I love among young men every stout-hearted one,

    Defiant, subject to neither prohibition nor command.

    He drags the trailing length of his spear before the caravan,

    When no heart is free of terror's grip.

    حِفاظٌ على الضرّاء مركبُه وعْرُ

    Thirst takes its toll on him, yet he guards their water;

    Honor rides a rugged mount through adversity.

    And many a timorous man whose deeds are strangers to glory:

    His obedience spans a fathom, his utmost reach a finger-span.

    He stretches a weary eye toward lofty heights,

    And extends a hand that victory does not know.

    When a Khatti spear is leveled, seeking his throat,

    Every spot along his sides becomes a throat.

    I say to him, as terror dyes his face,

    And breathlessness makes the flow of his breathing flutter:

    He who keeps his hope alive on conjecture will learn

    That competing with me is a grave for his hopes.

    I have a goal whose remembrance sends the steeds racing,

    Yet no thought of mine has strained to remember it.

    فَما عاقَني وَصلٌ ولا راعنِي هَجرُ

    I will grant my mounts the far journey they have intended;

    No bond has held me back, no parting frightened me.

    When Iraq's land has worn our mounts lean,

    Then tell the Mahri camels: 'Your resting halt is the Resurrection.'

    Upon them I donned the desert as night fled,

    And dawn was almost parting its lips in a smile.

    The darkness turned aside, hiding its form from the east,

    While half its body remained in the horizons' grasp.

    يبدّده همٌّ وينظمه شفْرُ

    I tell my companions, while sleep comes and goes,

    Scattered by care and strung together by an eyelid;

    And sleep's hands have bent their necks,

    As wine bends the sides of its drinker:

    فما بالها تَرْنو وأجفانُكمْ فتْرُ

    The eyes of darkness care more tenderly for glory than you;

    Why do they gaze while your eyelids droop?

    I beg you, by God, do not lag

    At the lions' second draught, until the full moon rises.

    And many a massed host whose dust veils the day,

    Roaring like a wind roused by rain,

    We carried death to it, with white blades and spears,

    With hands whose blows spill champions' blood without redress.

    We kindled in it the fire of spear-thrusts with youths—

    Firebrands whose blazing makes live coals grow dim.

    وإنْ صفحوا لم يستفزّهمُ الغِمْرُ

    When they take vengeance, pardon has no hope with them;

    And when they forgive, rancor cannot stir them.

    Never have they sent resolve into a spreading peril

    To find land a barrier; nor has any sea repelled it.

    Though you find them few wherever gain beckons,

    They are many in every calamity.

    O woman pressing blame upon an averted ear,

    You have called a wild fugitive whom no spell can touch.

    Back with you! I have left no examiner

    Any opening in time through which a probe could reach me.

    The ages put me off from their fruits,

    While the novice succeeds in what he claims from them.

    If only I had shortened my long experience,

    For there is no life but the life of one without experience.

    I testify: were prudence's hand to reach far among mankind,

    The world would yield no milk to its people.

    ما نفعُ مالٍ دون عورتِه سِترُ

    Had I wished, wealth's halter would have settled in my hand;

    What use is wealth with a veil before its nakedness?

    فذُخرُك من كسب المعالي هو الذّخرُ

    Leave wealth for every hoarder to milk its flow;

    Your treasure earned in lofty deeds is the true treasure.

    Do not deem one surrendered to his inherited wealth

    A free man: the whims of wealth are his captivity.

    Is honor anything but being seen to ask for nothing?

    Your asking is a loss repaid by no reward.

    There is no good in aid for which a hand must be stretched,

    Nor in a gift for which thanks are exacted.

    وَعندَ اِمتداد الضّيم ما يُحمد العِشْرُ

    I have been content, yet am not content to reach a limit;

    When humiliation persists, companionship earns no praise.

    Can a station such as others accept gladden me,

    When no measure can encompass my ambition?

    May God water a time when I yielded to no fear,

    And no reproach or rebuke it brought restrained me.

    When a predicament entangled me, I outstripped its reach,

    As gold keeps impurities away from its side.

    Your share is in what people speak of often,

    Yet its harvest amid their deeds is scant.

    For glory alone I long to live; and sometimes

    One age has granted it to me, another put me off.
