دعواleave aside اليومَtoday ماwhat عُوِّدتُمُyou have been accustomed to منof تصبُّرٍpatient endurance
دعوا اليومَ ما عُوِّدتُمُ من تصبُّرٍ
فإنّfor indeed نزاعيmy longing غالبٌoverpowering لنزوعيover my turning away
فإنّ نزاعي غالبٌ لنزوعي
Leave aside today the patient endurance you have been taught,
Leave today what you are used to of patience,
For my longing defeats my efforts to turn away.
For my strife overcomes my inclination.
فماfor not القلبُthe heart منّيof mine فارغاًfree منof تذكّرٍremembrance
فما القلبُ منّي فارغاً من تذكّرٍ

My heart is never free of remembrance,
My heart is never empty of remembrance,
Nor is my eye anything but full of tears.
Nor are my eyes other than those that shed tears.

Had I the power, out of longing I would set
If I were able, I would make clouds
My lifeblood in place of my tears when I weep.
Instead of my tears during weeping my wailing women.

وفيما وهبتُ لا يُخاف رجوعي
In what I have left behind, there is no fear of my wavering,
In what I have left, my return is not feared,
And in what I have given, no fear of my taking it back.
And in what I have given, my taking back is not feared.

How can I live if I do not die, when
The dwellings of departed mortals are my dwellings?
The dwellings of the annihilated people are my dwellings.

I am but one of them, so when
I shall appear when my lifetime ends.
My life ends, it will be my rising.

Have you not seen how this life has shaded us
Unawares, with every horror?
In neglect from us with every horror.

And how it hollowed my bones, and its reversals drove away
And how fate chose my bones and scattered its turning,
My slumber and forcibly destroyed my sleep,
My rest, and forcibly seized my calmness.

It dragged me over the thorns of calamity,
And kindled fire in my parched ribs?
And ignited a fire in the dryness of my ribs.

It hurried me with lasting sadness, and I was not
A drinker of anything but what I chose.
For other than what it chose, disposed.

It pelted me with constant afflictions
By my swiftest steeds or the weave of my armor.
That my chargers and knitting of my armor could not deflect.

Neither my keen sword nor my slender spear shields me from it,
Neither my sword nor my withering protected me from it,
Nor do my clan and all my company aid me against it.
Nor did my tribe aid me against it or all my band.

It came to me at midmorning—may its coming yield no blessing—
It came to me in the morning, paying no heed to its coming,
And my stretch of night returned, unafraid of daylight.
Then returned and did not fear my shouting at it.

My grief was doubled, its sorrow compounded,
It doubled my anguish and continued its sorrow,
By my unwilling submission to it and my abasement.
Subduing me to it forcibly and humbly.

It made my dwelling in the valley of misfortunes,
And my dwellings beside lasting sorrow.
And on the side of lasting grief my meadows.

They said death's hand had carried off Rukn al-Din,
They said Barqan al-Din has fallen and the calamity has destroyed
And he fell stricken, the noblest of the fallen.
The best fallen one, and he is the best fallen one.

They kindled a blaze of fire between my ribs,
They ignited the flames of fire in my chest
And tore out my roots and branches with anguish.
And felled my roots with ember and branches.

They passed on, leaving a bitter pang in my heart,
They passed and left in my heart lasting regret,
And sowed lasting despair over him within my soul.
And they scattered long despair from it with my intellect.

Had I been able to ransom him, I would have done so,
If I were able to ransom, I would ransom him,
But my whole being was helpless before death's disease.
And my whole band would be afflicted by the malady of death.

And I would have shared my life with him, who had dawned
I would share my life with him which was
Upon it with what I desired, in the fairest dawning.
Rising upon him in what he loved, the best rising.

They said, 'Be patient'—yet patience tastes like bitter aloes
They said, "Be patient," but patience is like patience in taste
When it is for a rent left without mending,
When it is about a rip without a patch.

And for a man unlike other men in virtue,
And about a man not of virtuous men,
And for a mountain, lofty in structure and towering.
And about a high solidly built mountain.

He who made you drink every bitterness consoled you,
He consoled you who made you drink every bitterness,
And he who brought you every pain greeted you.
And greeted you who met you every pain.

Had I hoped for his return, I would have borne his loss in hope of reward,
If I hoped for his return, I would deem it likely,
But he has gone, with no return.
But he is gone without return.

I am as one stung, now that they have told me, 'He is gone,'
As if I were touched and told, "He passed away,"
Though nothing with a sting had stung me.
And I was not of those with spears, but unarmed.

So what benefit is there in the spring, though it is
My season, when death has carried off my spring?
My time, when misfortune has turned with my spring?

And in life after a man whose goodness was pleasant?
And replaced its narrow straits with spacious ease?
He is replaced by distress instead of spaciousness.

All that a squanderer's hand had spent?
All he expended in the palm of a squanderer.

I blamed you sovereigns because you
Turned away and bestowed no gracious favor.
Turned away and did not do good favor.

Nor did they take off their robes for a stranger.
Nor did you take off your clothes for tearing.

How far apart are a granter of wishes and a despoiler,
So how far between a giver of wishes and a depriver,
And one who starves me and one who slays my hunger!
And between one gathering for me and a killer of my hunger!

When I saw the superiority in him I obeyed him
Though I had always been disobedient to kings.
And did not remain for the sovereigns disobedient.

Did you not see me, when I reached his death,
Hamstring my camel, or cut my saddle-straps?
I hamstrung my camel or cut its leading rope?

Had their flesh not been cut up by spear-thrusts,
If their flesh had not been pierced by the piercing ones,
They would have returned without shedding sweat for us.
They would not have flowed with blood for us.

You took the banner of victory until you planted it,
With your right hand, on an open plain in the land of certainty.
With your right hand, in the land of conviction, immaculate.

You did not allow the white blades and spears
That drink the water of ribs when led to it.
To return when dispatched to the water of ribs.

My steps faltered, and my whole body shuddered.
