If you were in a state like mine, you would not wish to blame me.
If you were in my state, you would not blame me,
You press me to forsake one whose forsaking is my death.
Reproaching the estrangement of one whose estrangement is my death.

Leave off blaming me, for blame comes from you; never
This ardent longing is neither of my choosing nor my doing.
Was this youthfulness from me, nor my constitution.

In the caravans are those who, had they wished, could have excused me
On departure day, when we had set out in haste,
The day we departed in haste.

With a pause they did not want me then,
And it is the cure for the ailments I complain of.
Which would have healed what I complain of in my illness.

Had we passed through Wadi Al-Udhayb, he would have known
Anyone who has grappled with longing—that I am too preoccupied for you.
Who cured my passion while I was busy with you.

At separation's bidding from Sharaf, is driven among the camels!
Tamely submitted to the driving along of the camels.

Of the gently pacing camels awaken desire.

A band at Mina whose mouths, as they gape,
To lap at the throats of mature she-camels,
Reach the holes of the slender nose-rein.

By bands come from plain and mountain,
With banners from plain and mountain.

The rising of the sun nearing the rocky hill.

The pride of this kingdom has indeed attained
Lofty, beyond the reach of hands, unattainable;
A lofty eminence too high for hands to pluck.

A smooth height that people think belongs to an angel,
Smooth it seems to men, as if held in possession,
Yet in truth it belongs to a man.
While in fact it rests with a man.

That change of nights has dyed, which it has not dissolved.

It is as if in early time it had not been uttered.

I would move about trailing the hem of the proud robe
And one who trails glory forgets one who trails fine robes.
While the proud one forgot the wearer of robes.

At the remotest end of your house, not counted as stingy!

As thirst-crazed camels yearn toward a cloud pouring rain.
With the yearning of the zealot for the rushing cloud.

Has either hesitated or barely escaped from reason.

When they sensed treachery, as you grew distant, and when
Frightened by your nearness, they averted their eyes from it.
Through your nearness they ignored it with disdain,

And has no defense, is peace founded on concealed ill will.
For one who enters in haste.

Of one compassionate, and the wilful or insolent is blamed.

Though sometimes the offender stumbles and is not corrected.
