If you do not intercede over a shameful deed,

nor intercede for a frightened person to secure safety,

then you are nothing but a mirage on an open plain,

that misleads my judgment or deceives my sight.

I found you of no use in our prosperity,

nor in times of hardship and misfortune.

And you are not worthy of our hearts' love,

but rather of hatred and loathing.

Remain alone and solitary, and for once put aside

    so-and-so's hypocrisy or so-and-so's deceit.

For how often I lived bound to people whose company I kept,

yet I gained nothing from that bond.

I blame my age where they are concerned, and on their account,

yet, were I fair, the fault is not my age's.

So if you object to the veiled allusions, and there have reached

you the purposes and meanings within them,

    فكيف إذا أطلَقْتُ فيه عِناني

    then this is with my speech bound fast in prudence's hand;

how, then, would it be if I let my rein loose in it?
