إِذاif لَمnot تَكونيyou are دارَan abode of فَضلٍbounty ونَفحَةٍand largesse
أَنالُI give to بِهاin it العافيthe supplicant فلستِthen you are not بدارِan abode
If you are not an abode of bounty and largesse,
where I give to the supplicant, then you are no abode.
أَبىrefused المَجدُglory يَوماًever أَنthat أكونَI be معرّجاًturning aside
علىtoward سَفَهٍfolly أوor أنْto ألُمَّI draw near بعارِto disgrace
Glory has never allowed me to turn aside
toward folly, or to approach disgrace.
ولاnor كنتُI was يوماًever للهوانِto humiliation مصافياًa close friend
ولاnor بينamong أبياتِthe houses of اللّئامthe base قراريmy dwelling
Nor have I ever befriended humiliation,
nor is my dwelling among the houses of the base.
بَرَزتُI came forth فَماso not أخفىI am hidden عليكfrom you كأنّنيas though I
علىon ذُروةthe summit of الأطوادِthe mountains توقدis kindled ناريmy fire
I stand revealed, not hidden from you, as though I were
on the mountains' summit, my fire kindled.
وَماand not ظاهِريmy outward self فيamong النّاسِpeople إلّاexcept كَباطنيlike my inward self
وليلِيَand my night فيin ثوبِthe robe of التُّقىpiety كنهارِيlike my day
My outward self among people is just like my inward self,
and my night, in the robe of piety, is like my day.
طَلَبتمْyou sought عَوارِيmy flaw ظالمينunjustly فلمbut not تكنْwas
لتظفَرَto lay hold كفٌّa hand منكُمُamong you بعَوارِيof my flaw
You unjustly sought a flaw in me, yet no
hand among you could lay hold of a flaw in me.
فإنْso if كنتَyou are لاnot تعرفْyou know وقارِيmy dignity جاهلاًin ignorance
فسلْthen ask شامخاتِthe towering heights of الصُّمِّthe solid mountains كيفhow وقاريmy dignity
So if, in your ignorance, you do not know my dignity,
then ask the towering, rock-solid mountains what my dignity is like.
ولمّاand when جريناwe raced للفخارِfor glory عثرتُمُyou stumbled
وأعوزكمْand it eluded you أنto تسمعواyou hear بعثاريof my stumbling
And when we raced for glory, you stumbled,
and you could find no word of a stumble of mine.
وربّand many a مقامٍstand لمnot يقمْهُheld it سوىexcept الفتىthe gallant youth
كفانيsufficed me لسانيmy tongue فيهin it وَقْعَthe stroke of غِراريmy sword's edge
And at many a stand that only a gallant youth could take,
my tongue there sufficed me instead of a stroke of my blade.
أدِرْpass around لِيfor me نديميmy drinking companion كلَّevery يومٍday وليلةٍand night
كؤوسcups of نجيعٍblood لاnot كؤوسcups of عُقارِwine
Pass me, my drinking companion, each day and night,
cups of blood, not cups of wine.
وإنْand if شئتَyou wish إطرابيdelighting me هناكthere فغنِّنِيthen sing to me
وقِدْرُwhile the cauldron of الوغىbattle تغلِيboils بمُدرَكِwith the attainment of ثاريmy vengeance
And if you wish to delight me there, then sing to me
while the cauldron of battle boils with my vengeance won.
وَقُلْand say لِلعِداto the foes كفّواcurb فضولَthe excesses of طماحِكمْyour ambition
فَماfor not أَنتُمُyou باللّاحقينcatching up with غُباريmy dust
And tell the foes: curb the excesses of your ambition,
for you cannot catch up with my dust.
