If gray hair has succeeded black hair at my parting,

For night is followed by the bright morning.

Whoever death's bow misses after it has fired,

His hair-partings and locks turn white.

If pitch-dark night had any merit,

No torches or lamps would be brought near it.

White hairs are a smiling face to the eyes,

And black hairs, to the eyes, a scowling face.

And stronger than a young steed, when horses run,

In running, and the most enduring of them, is a sturdy, full-grown horse.

And mature camels eat up the road unscathed,

While on the road lie exhausted young camels.
