إذا ما خطاني الدّهرُ يوماً فلم يُصِبْ

صميمي فما يرضيه غير خليلي

If fate strikes me one day but fails

To pierce my core, only my beloved consoles him.

وأخذُ الرّدى نفسي كأخذ أصادِقِي

فلم يَحمِنِي كُثْرُ الأذى بقليل

And if the days take my soul like they took my friends’

Then many sorrows could not protect me a little.

فإنْ أنت لم تسمع عويلاً بميتتي

ففي كلّ ماضٍ رنّتي وعويلي

If you never hear a wail at my death

In every past my cries and wails echoed.

وكيف أغُبُّ الحزنَ يوماً وإنّما

سبيلُ جميع الهالكين سبيلي

And how can I avoid grief for even a day when

The path of all the doomed ones is my path.
