I visited Hind, with darkness for my shirt,
not by appointment, and a sword-belt for my cloak.
وَاِعتَنَقناand we embraced وَبَينناand between us جَفنُthe sheath ماضٍof a keen sword
فيthrough فراشِthe thin bones الرؤوسِof heads أيُّwhat مضاءِkeenness
And we embraced, a keen sword’s sheath between us—
how keen it is at cleaving skull bones!

And she drew away from it, yet has no—if
she is fair—aversion to its nearness.
إِنّهُindeed, it حارسٌa guardian لَناfor us غَيرexcept أنthat ليْis not (first part)
سَ(completion of ‘is not’) عليناover us منamong جُملةِthe ranks الرُّقباءof watchers
Indeed, it is our guardian, yet it is not
one of those who spy upon us.

At your throat you wear amulets against evil eyes;
so count it an amulet against enemies.

مِنof حَديثٍconversation وَقيلةٍand speech وَاِشتِكاءِand complaint
It is heedless of what occupies us—
conversation, words, and complaint.

ناعماًin bliss لاnot أخافُI fear غيرother than التنائيseparation
And leave me, throughout this closeness,
in bliss, fearing nothing but separation.
فَلَئِنfor even if مَسَّbefalls فيهِin it بعضsome عناءٍhardship
فَعناهُthen its hardship مُستَثمرٌreaped as fruit منfrom عنائيmy hardship
For even if some hardship attends it,
then its hardship is fruit reaped from my own.
