I trusted you until I was ashamed; how often has
trust brought us shame upon our cheeks!
وماand not كنتُI was أخشىI fear قبلهاbefore it إنْif كشفتُكُمI uncovered you
أُكشّفكمْI would expose you عنas having مثلِthe like of هذيthese القبائحِugly faults
Before this, I never feared that, if I uncovered you,
I would expose such ugly faults in you.
هَبونِيsuppose me اِمرَءاًa man لاno مَنَّfavor منهfrom him عليكُمُupon you
ولاand not كانhe was يوماًever عنكُمُin your defense بمُنافحِa defender
Suppose me a man who has done you no favor
and never once stood up in your defense;
وإنْand if قادكمْhe led you كُرْهاًagainst your will إلىto ربوةِthe hill of العُلاglory

and if he led you against your will to glory's hill,
you recoiled backward like exhausted beasts.
ولمand did not يسعَhe strive فيماfor what تبتغونyou seek ودونَهُand before it

And never strove for what you sought, though before it
stood a barrier of enemies that would not budge.
وأدْناكُمُand he brought you near عفواًfreely إلىto جانبِthe side of الغِنىwealth
وكلُّكُمُand all of you ما(emphatic particle) بينbetween ناءٍone far off ونازحِand one far away
And freely brought you close to wealth's side,
while all of you were distant and far removed.
وقدand indeed صَلُحَتْprospered أيّامُكمْyour days باِجتِهادِهِthrough his striving
فَلِمْso why يومُهُhis day ما(emphatic particle) بَينكمْamong you غيرُnot صالحِgood
Your days prospered through his striving,
so why is his day among you not good?
وَأَظْفَركمْand he won you بالعزِّwith honor وَالعزُّand honor شاهقٌlofty
وَأَنتُمْwhile you بِلاwithout طَرْفٍan eye إلىtoward العزِّhonor طامحِaspiring
And he won you honor, though honor towers high,
while not an eye of yours aspired to honor.
شَحَذْتُكُمُI sharpened you سيفاًinto a sword أصُدُّI repel بهwith it العِدىthe enemies
وماand not كانwas عنديin my reckoning أنّthat سيفِيَmy sword جارِحِيmy wounder
I sharpened you into a sword with which to repel enemies;
I never imagined that my own sword would wound me.
وإنّand indeed الّذيthat which أغراكُمُtempted you بقطيعتِيto sever ties with me
وقدthough indeed كنتُI was وصّالاًa constant keeper of ties لكمْwith you غيرُnot نازحِdistant
And indeed, what tempted you to sever ties with me—
though I kept close ties with you and never stayed away—
وَإنّيand I indeed لَسَمْحٌtruly generous باذلٌfreely giving بِفراقكمْin parting from you
وماand not كنتُI was فيهabout it برهةًfor a time بالمسامِحِconsenting
and I am truly generous, freely offering to part from you,
though for a time I had not consented to it.
تبدّلتُI changed لمّاwhen أنْthat أرَبْتُمْyou aroused suspicion ولمand did not أُعِنْI help
علىbecause of رَيْبِكُمْyour treachery بيضاًwhite hairs بسودِwith black المسائحِtresses
I changed when you aroused suspicion, and did not reinforce
white hairs with black tresses on account of your treachery.
وأخْرَجَand drove out ماwhat أبْدَعتُمُyou devised منof مساءَةٍmistreatment

And the mistreatment you devised drove out
the love for you that once lay within my ribs.
وَلَمّاand when شَرِبتُI drank الوُدّaffection منكمْfrom you بسومِكمْat your asking price
رجعتُI returned بكفٍّwith a hand بيعُهاits bargain غيرُnot رابحِprofitable
And when I drank affection from you at your asking price,
I returned with a hand whose bargain brought no profit.
وَلَولايَand were it not for me فيin مِيزانكمyour balance يومَon a day of خبرةٍtesting
لَماit would not كانَhave been إِلّاexcept شائلاًrising غيرَnot راجحِweighty
Had I not been in your balance on a day of trial,
it would only have risen, not sunk with weight.
فَلاso do not تَحسبواthink أنّيthat I مقيمٌremaining علىunder أذىًharm
فإنِّيَfor I مَوْتورٌwronged كثيرُhaving many المنادِحِways out
So do not think I will keep enduring harm,
for I am a wronged man with many ways out.

فَماthen not هوَhe إلّاexcept كالعدوِّlike the enemy المكاشِحِthe spiteful one
If one day my friend harms and hurts me,
he is no different from a spiteful enemy.
تَقَطَّعwas severed وُدٌّaffection كانَthat was بَينيbetween me وَبينكمْand between you
وطاحتْand cast down بهِit فيonto الأرضِthe earth إحدىone of الطَّوائِحِruinous calamities
The affection between us has been severed,
and one of the ruinous calamities flung it to the earth.
فَماso no لِيfor me إِلىtoward أَوطانكمyour homelands منany مطامِحٍlonging glances
وماand no لِيfor me إلىtoward أعطانكمْyour watering places منany مَسارِحِgrazing grounds
So I cast no longing glances toward your homelands,
nor have any grazing grounds at your watering places.
وماand no لِيَfor me إِلْمامٌvisit بدارِto the dwelling of حُلولِكمْyour residence
وَماand not كنتُI was إلّاexcept بينَbetween غادٍa morning visitor ورائِحِand an evening visitor
I make no visit to the dwelling where you reside,
though once I was always a morning or evening visitor.
وإنْand even if كانتِis البطحاءُal-Batha دارَthe home of مُقامِكمْyour residence
فماthen no لِيَfor me تعريجٌturning aside بتلكto those الأباطِحِgravelly valleys
And even if al-Batha is your dwelling place,
I make no detour to those gravelly valleys.
وأيْقنتُand I knew for certain أنّيthat I ثاوياًdwelling فيin دياركمْyour lands

And I knew for certain that, staying in your lands,
I was dwelling on the mirage of barren desert plains.
وكنتُand I was وماand not yet جرّبتكمI tested you كَلِفاًdevoted بكمْto you

فأظفرنِيso won me تجريبُكمْtesting you بالفضائِحِwith shameful revelations
I was devoted to you before I had put you to the test,
but testing you brought me shameful revelations.
لناwe have فيat تلاقيناour meeting وجوهٌfaces ضواحكٌsmiling
وكمand how many دونهنّbeneath them منof قلوبٍhearts كوالحِscowling
Our faces smile when we meet,
yet how many scowling hearts lie beneath them!
وقدand indeed كنتُمُyou were صبحاًmorning بغيرِwithout دُجُنَّةٍdarkness
فقدso indeed صرتُمُyou have become جُنْحاًnightfall بغيرwithout مصابحِlamps
You once were morning without darkness,
but now you have become nightfall without lamps.
فلاso do not تسألونِيask me عنabout صفاءٍunclouded affection عَهِدتُمُyou knew
فقدfor indeed طارit flew away فيamid هُوجِthe fury of الرّياحthe winds البوارحِscorching
So do not ask me about the unclouded affection you once knew:
it has flown away in the fury of scorching winds.
فَإِنْand if تَشحَطواyou grow distant بعدَafter اِجتِماعٍtogetherness وإلْفَةٍand intimacy

And if you are driven far away after closeness and affection,
by some sudden, crushing calamities,
فقلبِيَthen my heart عنكمْfrom you مُعرضٌturning away غيرُnot مائقٍfoolishly distraught
ودمعِيand my tears عليكمْfor you جامدٌfrozen غيرُnot سافِحِflowing
my heart turns away from you, not foolishly grieving,
and my tears for you are frozen, not flowing.
وماand not كلُّall ماthat لاقيتُI endured منكمْfrom you شكوتُهُI complained of it

وأوّلُand the beginning of جِدِّearnestness المرءِa man تعريضُa veiled hint مازحِa joker
I have not complained of all I endured from you;
a man's earnestness begins with a joker's veiled hint.
فشتّانَso how far apart لوif أنصَفْتُمُyou dealt fairly منagainst نفوسكمْyourselves
ولمand did not تظلمواdo wrong ماwhat lies بينbetween هاجٍa satirist ومادحِand a praise-poet
So what a difference—if you were fair, even against yourselves,
and did no wrong—between a satirist and a praise-poet!
وإنّand indeed غبينَthe dupe among النّاسِpeople مَنhe who باتends up عِرْضُهُhis honor

And the dupe among men is he whose honor ends up
exposed by his wickedness to certain poetic minds.
