And they have already crossed al-Ghuwayr's valley floor, then Wasit.

And I saw only dwellers who had become far distant.

A ruthless man, and gave judgment to an unjust one.

And bright-toothed women whom I charmed with my locks

Falsely promised those locks a speckling of gray.

Set flowing a roaring sea of noble lords.

And disdain its hollows and lowlands.

As the owner of sacrificial camels brands with fire.

And when at war, amid terror, they set battlefields ablaze.

    وَإِن قَبضوا لَم تلقَ في الخلقِ باسطا

    And if they open their hands, you find none among mankind closing theirs;

And if they close them, you find none among mankind opening theirs.

And how many ensnared they have rescued from unbelief's halter.

That overflow, making drought-stricken lands fertile.

Who, still a child, surpasses graybeards in every sphere.

He reaches its fringe and comes to you middling.

They had spotted beasts clinging to their haunches?

They fold the plains as Atḥamī cloth is folded.

They scatter shreds of froth, as though

They had splashed curds of milk onto their necks.

Like a wolf of the ghada scrub, you find him dust-covered and swift.

Were a maned lion clasping its prey in a crushing grip.

    The sons of the world seek to capture me through its guile;

But how far-fetched to trick me once I have broken free!

Yet have not reached the midway stations beneath it.

So whoever among them tasted it, I swallowed it.

Glorious deeds whose grandeur weighs upon the envious,
