حَلفتُI swore بمعشرٍby a company عَسَفواdrove hard المطاياthe mounts
يريدونthey seek البنيّةَthe sacred House منin تِهامَهْTihāmah
I swore by a company who drove their mounts hard,
I swore by a people who knew horses
Seeking the sacred House in Tihāmah;
They want the she-camel from her stumbling
وكلِّand by every مُعَرَّقٍgaunt mount كالنِّسْعِlike a girth-strap ضُمْراًlean
لهit has رَتَكٌa swift trot ولاnot even رَتَكُthe swift gait of النّعامَهْthe ostrich
And by each gaunt mount, slender as a girth-strap,
And every sweaty one, like a claw wound
Whose swift trot surpasses even the ostrich's.
He has a shoe, but not the ostrich
أتواthey came to جَمْعاًJamʿ وقدand had already وقفواstood جميعاًall together
علىat عَرَفاتʿArafāt ياoh سُقِيَتْmay it be watered مُقامَهْa halting-place
They came to Jamʿ, having all stood
They came together and all stood
At ʿArafāt—oh, may that halting-place be watered!
At Arafat, O quencher of its place
عِراصٌopen grounds مَنwhoever يزرْvisits منهنّamong them شِعباًa ravine
فقدthen indeed أمِنَis safe from الملامةَblame والنّدامَهْand regret
Grounds where whoever visits one of their ravines
A marriageable girl, he who visits her a misfortune
Is safe from blame and regret;
Has avoided blame and regret
وماand by what هَرَقوهthey shed it عندat مِنىًMinā يُبارِيrivals
بجَرْيَتِهِin its flow بهاthere ماءَthe water of الغمامَهْthe raincloud
And by what they shed at Minā, which rivals
That which they pelted at Mina competes
In its flow there the water of the raincloud;
In its flowing there with the water of the clouds
وأحجارand by stones قُذفنwere cast تُقىًin piety وبِرّاًand righteousness
كماjust as قُذفتْwas cast off بإصبعهاby its finger القُلامَهْthe nail clipping
And by stones cast in piety and righteousness,
And stones cast for purity and righteousness
As a nail clipping is flicked from its finger;
As pebbles were cast by her finger
وأقدامٌand by feet يُطفْنthey circle علىaround أشمٍّa lofty height
يُطِلْنthey prolong وقدand already علقنthey clung بهto it اِستلامَهْits reverent touching
And by feet circling a lofty height,
And feet that trample on "ashes"
Prolonging their reverent touch of it, having clung to it:
Prolonging while she attached to it her turban
لقدindeed فَضَلsurpassed القبائلَthe tribes آلُthe family of موسىMūsā
كماjust as فضلتْsurpassed علىover العَطَبِruin السَّلامَهْsafety
The house of Mūsā has indeed surpassed the tribes,
The clan of Moses excelled tribes
Just as safety surpasses ruin.
As the quail excelled the bustard
هُمُthey دعمواsupported قِبابَthe domes of المجدglory فيناamong us
ولولاهمْand were it not for them لكانit would be بلاwithout دِعامَهْa supporting pillar
They supported the domes of glory among us,
They supported the pillars of glory among us
And without them, it would have no supporting pillar.
And were it not for them, it would be without a pillar
وهمْand they دأَبواlabored tirelessly إلىtoward طُرُقِthe paths of المعاليhigh distinction
وماand did not حَفِلواthey pay heed بشيءٍto anything منof سَآمَهْweariness
And they toiled toward the paths of high distinction,
And they persisted upon the paths of loftiness
And paid no heed to any weariness.
And did not care for anything of weariness
وماand not أيمانُهمْtheir right hands إلّاexcept لبيضٍfor gleaming swords
يبلّغْنَthey bring الفتىthe young man أبداًalways مَرامَهْhis goal
And their right hands are for gleaming swords alone,
Their oaths are only to the righteous
That always bring the young man to his goal;
To reach the young man forever his purpose

And for tawny spears like long well-ropes,
And bay horses like high platforms
Through which they bring the armored warrior his death.
That lead to the perfect one her pigeons
وماand not أموالُهمْtheir wealth إلّاexcept لجودٍfor generosity
وإلّاand except للحَمالةٍfor debts assumed for others والغرامَهْand indemnities
And their wealth is only for generosity,
And their money is only for generosity
And only for debts borne for others and indemnities.
Or for the carriers and love

شريداتُwandering ones الشّجاعةِcourage والصّرامَهْand resolve
And among them encamped, and with them settled,
And through them have been wed
The wanderers of courage and resolve.
The unsettled of courage and firmness

And their fragrance wafts over all creation,
And their honor smells throughout the land
Just as wine delights the one who inhales its scent.
As her wine smelled good to its drinker

And were they not among us, there would be
And were it not for them being among us
No residence in the dwellings of honor.
The lands of glory would have no settlement
