    وَليسَ إلّا الهَوى والهمُّ والكَمَدُ

    I love one in whose affection there is no good fortune;

    and there is nothing but passion, worry, and anguish.

    It displeases him that he is my concern, and it angers him

    that I complained to him of some of what I suffer.

    O my friend, do not blame me for a passion with which I was assailed

    by that which no one has ever repelled.

    It came, though no foot of mine had hastened to reach it

    out of eagerness for it, nor had a hand been stretched toward it.

    So if you have patience in it, or fortitude,

    then in passion I have neither patience nor fortitude.
