قَرنتك بِي واللَّه يَعلَمُ أَنّني

قَرنتك بِي واللَّه يَعلَمُ أَنّني

أَرَدْتُ بِكَ الحُسنى فعدتُ المُخيّبا

أَرَدْتُ بِكَ الحُسنى فعدتُ المُخيّبا

I joined you to myself, and God knows that I

I associated you with me, and God knows

intended what was best for you, but returned disappointed.

That I intended the best for you, yet I was the disappointed one.

وَما كُنتُ فيما جِئتُ أَوّلَ صادق

وَما كُنتُ فيما جِئتُ أَوّلَ صادق

أَساؤوا بهِ ظنَّاً فكانَ المكذَّبا

أَساؤوا بهِ ظنَّاً فكانَ المكذَّبا

And in what I undertook, I was not the first truthful man

I was not, when I first came, truthful in what I said.

of whom they thought ill and who was therefore branded a liar.

They mistrusted me, so I was the one called a liar.

فَلا تَطمَعوا مِن ذي حِجىً بِنَظيرها

فَلا تَطمَعوا مِن ذي حِجىً بِنَظيرها

فَكُلُّ اِمرِئٍ يُدعى إِلى مِثلِها أَبى

فَكُلُّ اِمرِئٍ يُدعى إِلى مِثلِها أَبى

So do not expect its like from anyone of sound judgment,

So do not hope for the like of it from one who has wisdom.

for every man invited to its like has refused.

For every person is called to the like of it yet refuses.
