كمhow much للنّواظرfor gazing eyes منof دمٍblood مطلولِunavenged
ومُدَفّعٍand one rebuffed عنfrom وَجْدِهhis longing ممطولِkept waiting
How much unavenged blood have gazing eyes shed,
How many eyes has the wine made languid,
and how many a lover is rebuffed in his longing and kept waiting!
And how many revellers has it made loose-tongued!
ولقدand indeed حملتُI bore غداةthe morning زُمّتْwere bridled للنّوىfor departure
أُدْمُwhite الرّكائبِthe riding-camels فيهduring it كلَّevery ثقيلِheavy burden
And I bore, on the morning they were bridled for departure—
And I, one morn when the pitcher was passed round,
the white riding-camels—every heavy burden that day.
Bore off the dregs of the wine-skins however heavy.
وقنعتُand I was content منهمْfrom them بالقليلwith little ولمand not أكنْI was
أرضىI accept قُبَيلَjust before فراقهمْtheir parting بقليلِwith little
And I settled for little from them, though I had not
I was content with a little from them, nor was I
accepted little just before their departure.
Pleased, before parting, with a little from them.
لولاwere it not for دموعيmy tears يومthe day قامتْshe rose ودّعتْshe bade farewell
ماnot كانwould have been روضُthe meadow الحَزْنِof the rugged upland بالمطلولِdew-moistened
Had it not been for my tears the day she rose and bade farewell,
Had it not been for my tears the day they departed
the upland meadow would not have been wet with dew.
The garden of sorrow would not have flowed.
وأَرَتْكand she showed you وجهاًa face لمdid not تُنِرْgive light شمسُthe sun الضّحىof midmorning

And she showed you a face: the morning sun gave no light
And she showed a face the sun of morning
except through it—a face one could never tire of.
Had never shone on save with a sparkling radiance.
وتقلّدَتْand she wore as a necklace بأساودٍwith black serpents منfrom فرعهاher hair
وتبسّمتْand she smiled عنrevealing أشْنَبٍcool, gleaming teeth معسولِhoney-sweet
And she wore her hair's black serpents as a necklace,
She donned the black garments of its branches
and smiled, revealing cool, gleaming, honey-sweet teeth.
And smiled through lips sweetened with wine;
وَرَنتْand she gazed إليكtoward you بطرفwith the eye جَوْذَرِof a wild-cow calf رملةٍof a sandy tract
وخطتْand she stepped بحِقْفٍwith a curving dune فيin الإزارthe waist-wrap مَهيلِloosely heaped
And she gazed at you with the eye of a sand-dwelling wild-cow calf,
She glanced at you with the corner of a fawn-like eye
and stepped with a loose-heaped, curving dune inside her waist-wrap.
And traced with down on the skirt of her shift.
إنْif كنتَyou are تُنكرdeny ماwhat جَنَتْهhas wrought it يدُthe hand النّوىof separation

If you deny what the hand of separation has wrought,
If you deny what the hand of fate has done
the two witnesses are my ardent longing and my wasting.
My witnesses are my wasting frame and my tears.
ماwhat ضرّharm would it do منone whose ضنّتْwere stingy يداهhis two hands بمُنْيَتِيwith my wish

أَنto لاnot يَضِنّbegrudge عليَّto me بالتّعليلِwith consoling promises
What harm would it do one whose hands withhold my wish
What matters the niggardliness of their hands to me
not to begrudge me consoling promises?
If they are not niggardly in upbraiding me?
فإلىso until متىwhen أشكوI complain إلىto ذيone possessing قسوةٍhardheartedness

So how long must I complain to one so hard-hearted?
How long shall I complain against the cruelty of one deaf
And how long must I hope for a miser's bounty?
And how long hope for bounty from a miser?

Tell the drivers amid pale, lean camels,
Tell the assailants, now that the Pleiades decline,
whose necks incline toward the riding-camels' singing driver:
My inclining is toward the driver of the wine-skins.

Set down your saddles before the king of kings,
Make your way to the King of kings, your halting places,
for his courtyard is the caravan's finest midday resting place.
For the halting of the caravan is best at his abode,
حيثwhere الثّرىthe dust لاقىmet الجباهforeheads وأرضُهand his ground

Where the dust meets foreheads, and his ground
Where the soil has kissed foreheads and its expanse
is lavishly covered with the people's kisses.
Is spacious for a people given to kissing.

And his face seems the moon of the dark nights,
Like the moon of the gloaming his face
and the lovely sheen of a keen, polished sword.
And its brightness is that of a polished blade.
للَّهِto God belongs دَرُّكyour excellence فيin مقامٍa stand in battle لمnot تزلْyou ceased

God bless you for a stand in which you never ceased
God reward you for standing at a station you have not ceased
swiftly entangling its troops, one with another.
To be a foal circling round the other foals.
والخيلُand the horses جائلةٌwere wheeling علىover قِممٍheads هَوَتْhad fallen
ومناكبٍand shoulders فارقنwere sundered كلّevery قليلِshort interval
While horses wheeled over fallen heads,
While the horses charge down from the hilltops
and shoulders sundered time and again.
And the camels leave behind them all the little hills,
وكأنّهنّand as though they يخُضنwade through ماءَthe water ترائبٍof the upper chests

And as they waded through the blood from the breasts
As though they were swimming the eddies of Nu'm
of fallen men, they seemed to wade through muddy water.
Smooth rocks swimming in eddies of mist,
قدindeed جرّبوكthey tested you غداةَthe morning جنّتْran mad فتنةٌa turmoil

They tested you the morning a turmoil ran mad,
They tried you when discord raised its head
striking the minds of humankind with madness.
And reason in men was struck as by epilepsy,
فكأنّso it was as though مُضرمَهاits kindler مضرّمُone setting fire to عَرْفَجٍ'arfaj shrubs

So its kindler was like one setting fire to 'arfaj shrubs
As though it were a spark in the blackness of night
in the open desert, just lately ripe for harvest.
Whose reaping comes not with host or company,
وكأنّهاand it was like عشواءُa night-blind she-camel فيin غبشِthe murk الدّجىof the night

And it was like a night-blind she-camel in the murk of night,
As though it were a wild thing in the darkness of night
crossing the wilderness blindly, without a guide.
Blundering blindly and without guide.
فعدلتهاso you set it straight بالرّأيwith judgment حتّىuntil نكّبَتْit turned aside
عنّاaway from us بغيرwithout قنىًlances وغيرِand without نُصولِblades
So you steered it by judgment until it turned aside
But you made it swing straight with your wisdom
from us, without lances or blades.
Until it turned its back on us without scent or track,
وَركبتَand you rode منهاfrom it وهيwhile it was شامسةُrestive القَراof back
عمّاafter قليلٍa short while ظهرَthe back أيِّany ذَلولِdocile mount
And you mounted it, though its back was restive,
And you mounted it when the dawn flushed red
soon riding the back of a perfectly docile beast.
At an hour when mounts the base-born wretch.

And had it defied you, you would have let the lances judge
Had it been truly rebellious against you
over it, and the edge of the drawn, cleaving sword.
You had tamed it with the halter firmly bound.

And you would have filled the earth's expanse, wide as it is,
And filled the breadth of the wide earth with swordblades and spears
with keen swords, slender lances, and horses,
And horses and warriors;

and every man stripped of reproach, as though
As though the battalion in desire for booty
he had joined the battalion seeking blood-vengeance,
Craved only for blood-wit of the wounded;

naked except for the garment of valor,
Bare of all but the raiment of valour,
thirsting, quenched only by a slain man's blood.
Athirst save with the blood of the slain to drink.

And I who love your love and ever seek
your approval always; that is my hope.
Always your pleasure, and that is my hope,

And whenever one allegiance is exchanged for another
Whenever a people change from side to side,
by a people, you are safe from any change in mine.
Then you are secure from my changing.

And if you are well, my heart has sworn
And if you come to regard me justly
to heed no sick person among humankind.
My heart swears it cares not for blamer or dispraise

And do not judge me by my haters, for no light is shed
Leave me to criticize those who criticize;
by the noonday sun for cross-eyed eyes.
The noontide sun sheds no light for the dim of sight.

And let me find solace for missing what others have gained,
Let me make up for the good fortune others enjoy
if I have not stood there in abasement.
If I do not take in it the rank of the abject.

Her cheek is like day smiling on one beneath dark clouds,
Her cheek dimpled like the dawn smiling on an actor
for whom following every path had proved too hard.
Weary with long quest of every spectator.
وكأنّهاand she is like للمبصريهاto those who see her جَذوَةٌa glowing ember

And to those who see her, she is like a glowing ember,
As though for those who see her she were a flame
and to those who scent her, a fragrant waft of wine.
And for those who kiss she were all-embracing.
وكأنّماand as though هيshe عزّةًin might لاnot تُبْتَغىto be approached

And in her unassailable might she is like
As though she were a mighty thing unpursued,
a lions' lair with cubs.
A trembling doe, but lioness when she has whelped.

And she is like a meadow in the wilderness, played upon
As though she were the garden of Eden sacked
before dawn by the hands of the north and east winds.
By left hands of sorceresses acceptable.

She has been kept free of repeated themes, and her speech
Her figure repudiates the known meaning of figure;
was never spoken in any age gone by.
Her speech was not as the speech of yore.

And when the freshness of the boughs changes,
And when the bloom in the branches turns color
her freshness remains untouched by withering.
Her bloom is changeless and knows no fading.

So rejoice in this festival, and live to see its like,
Rejoice in this feast and linger on
in an abode populated with blessings.
In mansion of delight thronged with blessings.

And you have cast off the fast, never having turned
You kept the fast from yourself but were not perturbed
during it toward any lapse or slip.
By anything of error or slip.

And you refrained from all that is forbidden, while they only
You held aloof from all forbidden things;
fasted from drink and food.
They only fasted from food and drink.

And if you live on, we do not care for whom
And if you live we care not if there comes to us
among us a bereaved mother's tears flow at his death.
Misfortune, the tears of misery are our consolation.
