How long shall our heads be humbled by this affair,
How much our heads are humiliated by this matter,
when all we gain from it is quenched thirst and satiety?
And we have in it nothing but lean and satiation.
لمnot يَبعُدbe far removed المرءُthe man فِتْراًa thumb-to-forefinger span مِنfrom مَذَلَّتِهِhis abasement
لم يَبعُد المرءُ فِتْراً مِن مَذَلَّتِهِ

there is pasture in the pursuit of a good name.

واِنظرand look إلىat النَّاسِpeople قاضٍone dying لاnot يُطيقis able لماagainst what
واِنظر إلى النَّاسِ قاضٍ لا يُطيق لما
عراهُhas befallen him دفعاًrepelling وماضٍand one gone ليسis not يُرتَجَعُbrought back
عراهُ دفعاً وماضٍ ليس يُرتَجَعُ
And look at people: one dying, unable to repel what
And look at the people, a judge who cannot handle
has befallen him, and one gone, who cannot be brought back.
Repelling it, and one passing away who cannot be brought back.
كأنَّهمْas though they بعدafter أنْthat شطّcarried far away الفراقُparting بهمْwith them
كأنَّهمْ بعد أنْ شطّ الفراقُ بهمْ
لمnot يلبثواthey stayed بينناamong us يوماًa day ولاnor اِجتَمعواthey gathered together
لم يلبثوا بيننا يوماً ولا اِجتَمعوا
As though, after parting had carried them far away,
It is as if after separation has torn them away,
they had not stayed among us a day, nor ever gathered together.
