Hind rose to reproach me for generosity.

O Hind, praise is better than wealth.

Praise remains mine, even if I lose

my life, and family and children pass away.

Wealth is consumed by calamities and

misfortunes, until none of it can be restored.

And it is guarded all night—even if defended

by noble men—by a child and a slave.

    But praise cannot be taken

from my two palms by the craven scoundrel.

When I travel by night, it travels brightly with me,

in the late hours, while night's wing is black.

O Hind, this abode will pass away,

and closeness is followed by distance.

My life ebbs away, though I have not summoned

that death to take it, by evening or by dawn.

I would not be led submissively in its hand,

if there were any escape from death's hands.

    A man's final clothing is a shroud

that decays, and his last home is the grave's niche.

How many a company has had its homes deserted

in sorrow, and the course has veered away from them,

neighbors together in an abode of neglect,

with neither heat nor cold among them.

They left, only against their will,

those among mankind whom they loved and cherished.

And when he calls on riches in which he takes pride,

at death his riches betray him.

Eternal life is his wish, but he has

no lasting stay in this world, nor eternity.

O Hind, no shelter can protect against dread,

against fear of death—neither lowland nor highland.

All souls, though heedless through desire,

have an appointment between themselves and death.

The valiant is feeble before Time when

it swoops upon him, and the stalwart is weak.

If Time's ravaging could ever miss a man,

    it would miss the solid, dry, unyielding rock;

the ibex of Kazima's heights would escape it,

and the gray ostriches would not suffer from it.

Hind wishes, full of anxious concern,

that I might live forever; her wish eludes her.

And she would turn every calamity away from me—

how, when repelling it will not obey her?

'May separation never toy with us,' she says,

forgetting those whom distance has betrayed.

And hardship weighs upon her if it descends on

my home, and distress camps with me.

She wants for me what is not in her hands:

a lifespan extending across the days.

And she seeks to shield me, though it avails her nothing,

from a rest after which there is no toil.

You will find solace if we and you lose

our footing, and our time apart grows long.

How often one like you, herself passing away, has been visited

by a calamity, one among those that arise.

    I must be brought to death's watering-place,

finding it unwholesome, its draught pestilential.

It enters homes, and nothing repels it—

neither jest directed at it nor earnestness.

Do not scratch a cheek for me, for never

has scratching a cheek brought a man back.

And learn, if you are one who knows,

    that death attacks all humankind.

No draught has brought death upon you

that warrants rending your cloak for it.

Pay no heed to those who gloat, for

I am not alone in death, apart from them.

They have not attained their aims after me, nor

closed the breach with my equal, if they closed it at all.

I indeed spared them, though they did not know,

the enemies' plotting, whose schemes blazed.

And there rose with them, when I hauled them up,

with both hands by force, those very hollows.

They cast off obscurity through what I clothed them in:

    noble deeds filled with glory.

They plundered whole loads of honor

in which not a sa' or a mudd belonged to them.

I am the one who, amid the army, when

I cried, 'Charge with spears!' they charged.

I wear rings among the spears' gifts of honor,

joined by neither weaving nor mail-linking.

    Where spear-thrusts save you, and

the lean-flanked, full-grown, mighty steed does not.

Who can find me a man with shoulders stripped of

the world, swift to flee its deceit,

    escaping its dross without delay,

like a driven herd pressed hard by pursuit,

turning from the painted splendor of its adornment,

where desire is stirred and resistance is hard?

Patience against its flattery is a sturdy she-camel,

by which its baleful ties thrust one away.

O bitter world, whose taster thinks

throughout all time that you are honey!

As long as your error lasts—and it is desire within you—

it persists in you, while sound judgment departs.

How often you have made a covenant of faithfulness, yet

that covenant never ceases to weaken.

If the sins of your vicissitudes were counted for us,

time would expire before the counting ended.

As for the homes of those who trusted

your whispers, they are effaced and bare.

No sound is there, except when there sings

    a turtledove, or thunder rattles.

And there wept over those who dwelt there and departed

a dusky cloud, black at both edges,

resounding, as though the ringing of its rain-fringes

were lions roaring, frightened by it.

Where are those who, upon the summits, possessed

mighty honor, its sea an unfailing spring?

They were granted bliss; when it became complete for them,

it was stripped away, and all they had been granted ceased.

    Each one refusing baseness, whose

edge was never blunted in a quest,

like a lion whose form a thicket revealed,

and a sword whose blade its scabbard disclosed.

There bowed to their might and majesty

the gray-haired among the tribes, and the beardless.

    Their child rules, his amulet

still unbroken, his resting place the cradle.

They drove calamities back, leaving them in retreat,

but death they could not repel.

As though, after they had dwelt in the

graves, they had never jested nor been earnest.

What use is my striving toward a fixed term?

A man strives, though fortune has turned awry.

Yet if I am lost, I have words

surely immortal, never to be lost.

They cleave through lands, with no perceptible

smooth camel-trot across desert, nor swift stride,

each a rhyme that sets one dancing,

sung by the sweet singer whenever he sings.

When the fragrance of its breath spreads,

the oxeye flower says, 'The laurel gives forth fragrance.'

It rises like a midmorning sun upon a horizon,

    radiantly white, beyond denial.

    Its themes are as sparks

in the deep of night, kindled by a firestick.

It travels far; unruly speech is

pliant to it, and its freest eloquence a slave.

The envious bow before it for

its excellence, as do its bitter adversaries.

If the jewel of its wording had a body,

a necklace would add it to its thread.
