To an ailing heart from a promise by those who delay.
Beauty gathered in his face, deeming all shame as gain.

We passed by the dwellings, which had exchanged
Say to the brooding soul: Patience is fair, but the fickle is not.
Their freshness for decay and oblivion.
We knew not that sleep is rest; elsewise we'd have found our way to it.

Nothing but their traces and ruined remains.
And saw a streak as if a bared sword of my gray hair.

His color startled her, and were it not for the affliction of singers,
We would quench the heart's burning thirst.
she'd have deemed him fearsome.

Thinking it utter shame to grant a favor.
Blame him not, for gray hair shows the youth was meant to endure.

Tell the man urging patience, himself free of love—
The hue of youth is fleeting; how could it last if time went on?
And a reprover's kindness is no kindness—
If I could choose, and black my gown, I'd never want white instead.

The blade of youth unburnished is far dearer than the burnished one.
If only we could find a path to forgetting.
We sought, but ‘gainst gray hairs no refuge could shield us.
