لعنةُ اللَّه على مَنْ

لعنةُ اللَّه على مَنْ

كان بالودّ بخيلا

كان بالودّ بخيلا

God's curse upon whoever

The curse of God be upon him who

Was miserly with affection,

Is stingy with affection

وإذا آثر نَيْلاً

وإذا آثر نَيْلاً

كان للشّرِّ مُنيلا

كان للشّرِّ مُنيلا

And when he chose to give,

And when he prefers to attain

Was a bestower of evil;

He is inclined toward evil

وإذا جرّبتَ منه

وإذا جرّبتَ منه

مَضْرِباً كان كَليلا

مَضْرِباً كان كَليلا

And when you tested his

And when you have tested him

Striking edge, it was blunt;

As a close friend he is weak

وكثيراً فإذا اِستَنْ

وكثيراً فإذا اِستَنْ

صرتَهُ عاد قليلا

صرتَهُ عاد قليلا

And abundant—yet when you sought

And plentiful - then if you seek

His help, he became scant;

Support he becomes scarce

وجميلَ الوجه لو كن

وجميلَ الوجه لو كن

تَ ترى منه الجميلا

تَ ترى منه الجميلا

And handsome of face—if you were

A beautiful face, if only

To see anything fair from him;

You could see goodness from it

وصحيحاً فإذا سِي

وصحيحاً فإذا سِي

مَ ندىً كان عليلا

مَ ندىً كان عليلا

And healthy—yet when he was

Healthy - but if he travels

Asked for generosity, he was ailing.

A path he becomes sickly

لَيس حَظّي وهْوَ حظّي

لَيس حَظّي وهْوَ حظّي

في الورى إلّا قليلا

في الورى إلّا قليلا

My lot—and it is my lot—

My lot is not my lot

Among humankind is nothing but little.

In this life except a little

قِطُّهُ الرّاحة لو أن

قِطُّهُ الرّاحة لو أن

ن إلى الروح سبيلا

ن إلى الروح سبيلا

Its portion is rest—if only

Rest for my soul if only

There were a path to relief.

There was a way
